Well it turns out that during his serious-face address, Trump said the travel-from-Europe ban also applied to cargo, which set off something of a panic in Europe, which the White House has been rushing to get on top of by saying that the president "misspoke"....when he was reading the teleprompter? Anyway, so the travel ban does not apply to cargo after all.

Why keep out almost all Europeans, as if this problem is exclusive to Europe (and China), rather than global, and when the US has a rising infection problem all its own? And why exempt the UK, which is hardly coronavirus-free? There was no explanation, so speculation filled the vacuum. Could it be a politically motivated swipe at the EU, which Trump once said he regarded as the US’s greatest “foe”, pointedly giving preferential treatment to Brexit Britain? Was it driven by a motive as base as the fact that Trump has golf courses in the UK (and Ireland), and he didn’t want to harm his own businesses? Or did it spring from a crudely racist worldview that divides the globe into a clean, acceptable Anglosphere set against a tainted, diseased “abroad”?

I would like Trudeau, Markel, Macron, and others to drop diplomatic/subtle talk and use clear words about the irresponsible and ridiculous inaction of Trump. You are overestimating Merkel's power a lot, aside that this is not her normal type of behaviour. She's no world leader, since Germany is no global power. Germany is a regional power playing a bigger role in the fledgling global power EU, that's it.

Trump's going to Trump -- he's not going to listen to anyone other than, maybe, Vladimir Putin, so why waste time and energy when they badly need both to prepare for what's coming in their own countries?
