Oh brother, now he is saying how terrific columbus was (forget all the deaths and stuff) and how great a navigator he was (umm). This guy can not even get a simple ceremonial tweet right!

I'm typically not one to talk down about the technological achievements of older cultures; but really how skilled at navigation do you have to be in order to just sail west until you run into something?

Not to mention insisting it was where you meant to go no matter where you actually ended up. Contrary to popular belief he did not prove the world was round either as that was something already known.

Once you lose sight of land, it gets tricky. You think you are sailing west, but currents and winds don't go straight (or even in the same direction as each other). You need to constantly correct course or risk drifting for longer than your food and water last. In Columbus' case, he had miscalculated the size of the globe and would have run out of supplies if the Americas were not there.

All this Columbus talk reminds me of a favorite song.

Fraser and Debolt only recorded two albums, in 1971 and 1973. They may be my favorite albums, without doubt in the unknown category, and have been since the '70s.

One of the songs is Columbus Hits the Shoreline Rag. It is on youtube from someone who badly recorded the full album, at 3:11 to 6:47. Better than nothing, but maybe someday I'll buy a record player and the album off of Ebay.

I just typed the lyrics out for you VV'ers.

Columbus made his living
On a ship
Sailing on a deep dark sea
Working for the government
Looking for land
Sailing on the deep dark sea
He'd get so lonesome
Wandering around
He'd go to his cabin in tears
He said Lord, Lord send me America
I've got to get out of here

For hours upon hours
He'd walk the deck
Sailing on the deep dark sea
Walking back and forth
With his glass in his hand
Looking at the deep dark sea
In the fog, he was no good at all
His nerves were rather frayed
He said Lord, Lord, send me America
That's how Columbus prayed

Now to Columbus it was the USA
Sailing on the deep dark sea
And to you or me it's something else
Sailing on the deep dark sea
In the long run
Columbus hit the shoreline
And stuck in his flag
And the fiddler played a tune
At a quarter past noon
Called Columbus Hits The Shoreline Rag

Columbus miscalculated the width of the ocean, didn't take enough supplies, and the expedition's survival depended in a series of unlikely accidents. In most timelines they all died at sea.
It gets fun when you realise that every decision was done differently in some other bubble in the multiverse. Well, some alternate decisions are best not dwelled on but others are fun.

I would bet on clashes with Bolton. She has not been the most out there in Trump's team, but had to defend his BS and try to follow whatever advice is coming from the crazy wing. Her resignation said something about agreeing with most of Trump's policies, but not all of them.

Or maybe it was another ethics complaint.

GEOFF EARLE The (UK) Daily Mail said:
UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who stunned Washington with her surprise announcement she is resigning her post, was facing an ethics complaint over her acceptance of private travel between South Carolina and Washington, D.C.

Haley had disclosed the flights on her government form for 2017. But the issue of improper private jet uses has dogged multiple administration officials, and led to the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington filed the complaint against Haley, who has g earned high marks for navigating global affairs and the challenges of the Trump administration, on Monday.

Columbus was actually a skilled sailor and navigator for his time. You can't "just sail west" from Spain to the Americas because the general winds are easterly at that latitude. He had to sail *south* for a while to catch the "trade winds" (because they enabled trade), and understand the ocean currents, which affect where early sailing ships end up, in addition to the winds. You will notice that each of his voyages went west and east at different latitudes:

Not weird at all. She has further political ambitions, after being a governor and UN ambassador. Two years is long enough to punch the "international relations" ticket, and she probably doesn't want to lose future support of women by being associated with this administration after Kavanaugh got seated on the Supreme Court. She can't say it *yet*, but I could see her say in the future "I left after a sex offender put another sex offender on the high court".

Trump Administration Seeks to Stifle Protests Near White House and on National Mall

ACLU website and information. More consolidation of power and removal/impediments to our basic right of protest/free speech. We have until Oct 15th to comment at the link below.

Make Your Public Comment: Stop Trump from Restricting Our Right to Demonstrate

President Trump has a record of attacking the rights of protesters, from suggesting that protest be illegal to praising dictators who crush any kind of dissent.
Now, the Trump administration proposes to dramatically limit the right to demonstrate near the White House and on the National Mall, including in ways that would violate court orders that have stood for decades. The proposal would close 80 percent of the White House sidewalk, put new limits on spontaneous demonstrations, and open the door to charging fees for protesting.

Fee requirements could make mass protests like Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic 1963 March on Washington and its “I have a dream” speech too expensive to happen.

The public has until October 15 to comment on the plans, and on Monday, we submitted our formal written comment explaining why the planned changes are unconstitutional.

Actually, he famously insisted he was somewhere else, ignoring the then-current knowledge of the size of the earth (which was pretty accurate). To the point of renaming the people that were there so he could be shown to be right.

Done. In addition to various protests (of pretty much every politician) those areas are also used by locals for things like sports games and nonpolitical events.
