I could see how that could be useful to see in general how far apart people are in a crowd. As for how far one individual is from others, typical cellphone gps is only accurate to 10 feet or so I think, so that wouldn't work.
still would detect massive gathering or people moving in bulk (in contrast to chance meetings staying near to each other) the math to do so isn't that hard...

I’m not sure if anyone has been following his status, but John Prine’s family today have posted that he’s stabilized and no longer listed in critical condition from the virus.

New York currently has 13,700 people hospitalized for the coronavirus. 30,000 units is not at all unreasonable for the near future.

Once again Trump is showing his inability to look past the moment to consequences. If New York is allowed to become known as a "Plague City" because it is so crowded, people are going to want to move away to less crowded places. At the same time lots of people are learning they can work from home. If people move away, property values will go down and they will have more vacancies. Trump owns a lot of high-end New York property, just the kind of people who can afford to move out.

The Internet Archive is making their open library available to anyone, anytime with no waitlists. It has loads of current material. As a random example, The #1 book last year at Amazon was When The Crawdad Sings. They have it.

The legality is dubious. However, the book industry knows it would look terrible to fight this in court now. And the Internet Archive isn't speaking about that either, presumably so not to make waves.

There's nothing "dubious" about the legality -- they're flat out stealing copyrighted material, and they'll be facing some serious legal action when things settle down.

As someone who makes a significant part of my living from my copyrights, I have zero sense of humor about this.

Of course the authors who scrape by to barely make a living on their work are now being called “idea landlords” for speaking out against the theft of their work.

Yeah, one of my housemates is one of those barely making a living with his work....

--and an awfully large chunk of my friends are on varying degrees of making a living writing books.

The British police are considering how to cope when 20%--30% of their officers are off sick, or self-isolating:

I'm starting to understand why a lot of people here in the US have been stocking up on guns and ammo these past several weeks.
