Planting my sweet corn today. Corn is not something that I could grow when I lived in Fort Lauderdale. I'm hoping that it does better in Central Florida. Also planting some catnip. My darling little girl will love it.

I’m not planting any vegetables this year on my balcony, well, maybe some lettuce but that’s it. Takes too much space and time for the results. I do have some harlequin bulbs and Night Scented Matthiola seeds, though, for over the rail...

I planted some bush beans finally (but no lettuce). They never germinated last year and I still had about ten, so during an early mini-heatwave, I plopped them in a pot outside and said “Live or die, I don’t care.” Of course they decided to grow. It just had to be on their terms…

I have so many new plants, I don’t want to inundate the thread, so no pics, but I do want to show off my ordinary phal orchid that finally rebloomed (no bud blast) this spring.

13 flowers!

Well, they are in the same family group.
All plants in a same family have the same ancestor spiecies somewhere in the evolution process.
Just like tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, potatoes and tobacco.
Or in animal life humans, apes and monkies. And bigfoots of course, but that is worth another interesting thread.

We're not talking about foxes, wolves and jackals having a common ancestor. We're talking about all dog breeds being the same species. It's domestication and breeding, not evolution.

With breeding programs we influence evolution a bit.
In the NL we have tomatoe plants that climb up to 5 meters, growing fruits from bottom to top in the glass houses?
Why do you think that cucumbers all fit in those crates like if the crates are made around them?
Why do you think that we have strawberries at a bigger size then five milliliters?
Why do you think that the peppers (paprika) already taste good when they are green and totally not ripe yet?
All human interference in.......... evolution.
Breeding is what nature does in a slower pace.

Uh...

So, domestication and breeding.

Breeding does not generate entirely new species. At least, mankind hasn't been around long enough to claim any such thing.

There is also purpose behind selective breeding, sometimes called artificial selection. Whereas with evolution....unless you want to bring God into the argument?

I have no intention of debating this any further and certainly not scientifically in a for me foreign language.
As every teacher I have that (maybe bad) habit to share knowledge, sometimes even unasked for.
I told snippets of what I know, you gave your opinions.
They don't totally match, so what? The world will live (for now).

BTW, did you know that breeders identify 6 different species of Brussels Sprouts?
Of course they must be wrong according to your theory.
:p

At least you're not turning this into a science debate...
Oh, you were expecting me to chime in on zoological taxonomy of brassica? Nah, taxonomists are corrupt because getting to name a species is academic gold. Seriously, it's a mess. Blood on the lectern stuff.

I was talking about this:

I'm sure they identify a number of different "varieties." If they're calling them different species, they're not using that word correctly. :hellokitty:

The correct use of the word species is "variety someone got tenure for naming".
