From what Patch said in the thread earlier today, all they are doing is outlawing the use of the word gacha. The conveyor belt types are in and approved by Patch.

Yay?
As I said earlier...
Whoever is counceling LL must have won their law degree in the lottery (allegedly) they indeed allowed conveyor belt gachas... good luck with the lawsuits LL, you will need it.

So we cannot name them gachas? Why? Is that because they want to fool whoever is making those laws? I mean, those are still machines that operate like gachas, just with at leas one extra step - you know the first item you'll get (and maybe the second, third, or even more)
But yeah.. to me that sounds like they know they'Re a bit too close to gachas with that.
I will refer to them by what they are - gachas.
Also, where can I throw LL under the bus?

Over at Virtual Secrets... As the first comments on the gacha ban will appear there today I think I'll take the time and revisit that trainwreck of a social medium later - with popcorn.
But given what kind of people go there usually, it will likely be the "LL is stupid for banning gachas those are fuuuuuun" crowd that's gonna complain and then try to murder each other in the comments.

What would LL care, as long as they stay out of legal problems, they're fine with gambling-like activities in SL. They always where.

As far as I'm concerned, I never did gachas and never will, whatever they name it.
So nothing changes for me, just as a total ban would have changed nothing for me personally.

Where others trow their money at is not really my concern.

Why did LL even bother? Either outlaw the damn things or don't.

I don't even have the words for how let down I feel.

I should have known better considering gambling is still on the grid they just call it skill gaming instead. They can claim it isn't all they want. I'm not blind or stupid.

Can't have trust or faith in people any more, yet, I still have to have them in my life if I want to stay sane.

I am so fucked.
Even after over a decade, Second Life never once stopped surprising me. That is one aspect it never fails to disappoint. Even if new ways to disappoint is why it’s surprising.

When Valve had to remove lootboxes from Counterstrike in France, they did the same thing.

In France, you can only buy one lootbox at a time, and you can see what is in to know if you want to buy it. It is specific to you - other people in France see something different for sale. And yours will never change, unless you actually buy it.

This simple change made it allowed under the French anti-lootbox law.

It did not hurt their sales much - people still buy them over and over hoping to get what they want rotated in.

In fact it might have improved their sales by forcing them to buy one at a time - losing out on the bulk discount

My 2 cents:
SL is only a small potatoe in the big international online gaming and gambling industry.
If their name shows up trough search on gacha and lootboxes, they will not end up high on the prosecution list to begin with.
And if those prosecutors take the time to investigate and find in the SL ToS some nice lines about banning gachas and lootboxes, they should be from that list within a jiffy again.

Hm. Haven't even peeped at that sight in over 10 years. Got a link? I'm bored on a Sunday.

I have never cared for their "SURPRISE! *drops bombshell*" approach. It's not a good surprise feeling for me. More like "Surprise! We're bending you over a low tree limb! AGAIN!" to me.

Their approach literally breeds hatred. I know of one person (no, not me) that has gotten hate IMs* from another over this most recent bombshell.

I guess I'm just that torn between needing other humans and wanting to be able to completely cut them out of my life.

*They said the words "I hate you".

Japanese as in designed by the Japanese designer of D-Lab...

IMHO this will fail with flags flying:
  • no sniping mechanics will fail and people will cry bloody murder
  • when not failing the no sniping mechanisms will grind events to a halt
  • people will camp around the non gacha instead of buying stuff blocking others from entering the gacha sims
just my educated guess but I'll gleefullly slap my "Told you so!" sticker onto everyone whining if any of the above happen.

But I don't understand how this is okay. Like, people make a law, and everyone sees those devs just doing the barest of minimums, absolutely violating the spirit of the law.. and then it's okay? Why make the law in the first place then?

Same with Elder Scrolls Online - quit that due to the very predatory itemshop and the fact the devs/publisher lied to their users and mislead them so they spend more money, and then they went 180°. I do like the game by itself, even tho I think it's not a good Elder Scrolls Game. But oh boi, those asshole tactics made me sprint outta there. So yeah, they get to keep their lootboxes, because now you can earn their content ingame without money. Just need to collect crystal-shard. Which you need to do some tasks for. Which you can only do 3 per day and apparently, every task gives you 20 shards. The stuff you can buy, what I'd say are the common level, are around 2000 shards. They do have more levels than just 4 though, and what I deem common might not be what somebody else deems common. It's not the lowest tier. I consider the lowest tier trash, to be honest. >_>

But yeah, it's just an excuse, they know there's propably none that patient.

It's essentially the inability to define a clear black and white law to forbid the behavoir they want.

If they are smart the sniping can be resolved by just making a ton of machines - and making sure you can't reserve more than one at a time. Scale as much as needed. Technically it could even be one machine with a lot of reserve & pay slots.

*I just like solving problems. I don't like gacha scripts, but it's hard to say no when someone wants me to make something.
