IMHO America should not change to metrics for just that reason.
It is not practical and it would take more than a generation to get used to the new methode of measuring.
That is a very dismal view of America, I hardly think we are anything special down here where it happened when I was 8.

Eh - you cook long enough, you can eyeball a teaspoon vs a tablespoon, though I do use mine because I have them - but if you know the different flavours, and the flavours you are going for? you do not need precise - besides, if you need procise - you use grams for dry stuff anyways,.
I never said you need to be precise. Just that beginners need a reference point.

I do not use grams for dry measure I use dry measure cups. These days the liquid measuring cups have both metric and imperial. I STILL don't use metric.

A change to metric in the US should happen simply because it'll drive all the right groups and people into explosive conniptions.
So I'm just collateral damage? I'll remember that. :voodoo:

But what did NZ gain from it compared to all the trouble they had to go trough?
All the math books in school had to be replaced, all traffic signs and road signs altered or replaced, the stress with elder people, all the legislation that has to be changed and and and.
You were at the right age: You learned to handle metric measurement at the start of your school life. Never learned to calculate with fractions of inches. But I think that people that used the old system for over 30 years or so were not that happy with the change.

We changed to Euro little over 20 years ago now. There are still some people who calculate the amount in Euro first into the amount of the old Dutch gulden before they make financial decisions. It doesn't come smoothly with everybody.

Not having to use two systems. A Hermit Kingdom can get away with not using the measurement system everyone else uses, not so a trading nation.

These changes occurred over a few years, books are always going to need updating, road signs need replacing as the pain deteriorates.
the stress with elder people, all the legislation that has to be changed
The biggest hassle would have been for the adults, especially those not already partly exposed to SI through work.

Although officially the changeover would have been on a single date, the reality is it took a few years preparation and a few years of tidying up. Even when I learned to drive, some road signs still had mph in smaller numbers.

Not sure where to put this, but since Rick Scott is a Florida senator, I guess this thread is as good as any.

I'll never understand how Rick Scott keeps getting voted into office in Florida. Like the lady said, he's an asshole. He's a crook too.

I would have hit him somewhere else, verbally. Rick Scott was -not- born rich, quite the opposite; I'd ask him how it feels to turn his back on his roots, and treating people holding jobs like the ones his mom held, like shit. I wouldn't have yelled, I'd have channeled my cold anger.
