I sincerely hope those who threw their votes away alongside those who actually voted for the piece of trash are happy with what they've done.

I do not ever want to see a single one of them even remotely pretend they currently give, will give or have ever given a single fucking shit about anyone's safety, well-being, rights or any fucking thing else.
Yeah, I can't fuckong wait for Trump to end their Spcial Security and Medicare and they start whining so I can tell them to fuck off because this is 1000% what they wanted and voted for.

Maybe when shit actually afects rhem they will get their idiot asshole heads out ofntheir fucking asses.

Buttigieg, maybe Pritzker, but then Illinois would be fucked.
The people who would not vote for a woman would vote for a man in a same sex marriage? Or the guy on tape discussing a political appointment with Blagojevich in a conversation that included racist remarks?

Don't forget that Biden was totally unpopular as president during the last years. That wasn't much of a help for Harris, who is part of Biden's Democratic administration.
Besides, the world is shifting to the right. Especially the youngsters are very self centered and only think: "What is in it for me right now?"
In the past the youth was more orientated to the progressive side of politics. Now the (extreme) right flourishes.
The right will have to screw up big time first like in the UK over the last couple of years, before the more leftish side gets another chance I guess.

Given these circumstances Harris did extremely well IMHO.
She did not lose because she is a woman, but because there is a shortage of people in favor of the Democrats in the USA at the moment.

In my opinion the Democrats have to rethink their political agenda. And come up with good selling points.
In 2 years Trump can be made a political lame duck during the next elections, no?

So, a man.

Got it.

An unfortunate reality that I hoped wasn’t true and shouldn’t be but sadly is. Majority of voting Americans would prefer a lying demented rapist than a woman.

Would a middle aged white man have won? Hard to say as there wasn’t one ready but my hope for America is that they find a few and start preparing them because I don’t see that changing.

As much as we can agree it shouldn’t matter, the reality is it does and probably will in four years.

I think democrats really need to work on better "sound byte" politics. If you have to explain yourself, you've already lost to many Americans with tiny attention spans.

Biden was honestly one of the most effective presidents ever to be so unpopular. He took the blame for the mess he inherited.

Fair point. But why do we have to reinvent the wheel when it's already been done?
I was in the middle of making a comment about women leaders when my browser died so the comment died.

Basically, without all the names and countries: I'd felt the vague desire to include a note about how, for all the talk about how anti-woman the Muslim religion can be, Pakistan had a woman leader, Benazir Bhutto, in 1988, and reelected in 1993.

And in other Muslim majority countries, we have: Khaleda Zia served as prime minister of Bangladesh from 1991-1996, and then from 2001-2006. Sheikh Hasina served as prime minister of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001, and then from 2009-2024. Tansu Çiller Prime Minister of Turkey from 1993-1996. Mame Madior Boye prime minister of Senegal from 2001-2002. Plus 8 more individuals.

Not a lot, but the USA has/had zero.

I do not recall why I felt the need to look that up.

Yeah, I have my thoughts about what could have been handled better, but I’m not sure today is the day to share them. Mostly, in times of uncertainty, even good people can become more selfish, greedy, and blind to logic, so I’m not sure even the best candidate ever would have made a difference.

I can’t help thinking of our own federal election coming around soonish.

Anger can be power, but you need all of your energy for that. For the time being, be kind to yourself and those around you. Stay safe everyone. :grouphug:

I'm sure there will be a 2028 election. ....how fair it will be is another question. There will be a lot more voter suppression and LOTS of disinformation. Trump is also likely to take credit for the fact that Biden already fixed the economy.... so yeah...

I mean, it sucks, but its better than fucking fascism. This "not enough" mindset is part of why we are where we are today.
And yet we're now headed directly for that very fascism. And I blame White Men. I'm married to one. I'm related to a bunch.

It's not that there wasn't enough. It's that there was too much - paternalism, autocracy, sexism, and so forth. I don't think any of us D's asked for that, we voted against Trump because we are already fed up with the attitudes he represents. I just don't think the manner in which Kamala became the candidate should have been the problem - I think it was her gender.

And to be clear women aren’t inherently better candidates, even though I wish more were elected, my own provincial premier is evidence of that. She’s somehow electable though even in Alberta. ☹

I really don't need to listen to Aeon crowing right about now. Ignored. He's more annoying than Grammarly and Adobe ads combined.
One of my very last posts here, directly after Biden stepped aside was saying that America just wouldn't vote for her and it would have nothing to do with her, specifically. It would be because America hates black people, but it's possible they hate women even more. Combine the two and this was always going to happen.

Walz is such a good man, too. God helps us when Vance steps in. I think, for Trump, this was always about recovering from the humiliation of 2020, avoiding prison and getting his revenge. I don't think he will actually do the job of President any more than he did last time. Vance and the Heritage Foundation among the other people who will benefit from this, are more than happy to do the job.

My heart hurts for what is about to happen to all of America, especially those that are about to be targeted. Those that voted for this? They can go pound sand when they get what they voted for, and that includes that little wormtongue.

What the “most anti-LGBTQ” election in decades means for trans people

So much has changed, as a network of conservative and religious-right groups coordinated to push hundreds of bills to wipe out trans youth health care, bar them from sports teams that match their gender identity, and censor discussion of LGBTQ issues in schools. With more than 129 anti-LGBTQ laws passed across the country in the last two years, GOP candidates now are betting that they’ve seeded enough anti-trans sentiment among voters to use transphobia as a motivating issue. It doesn’t seem to matter to Republicans that trans issues still tend to rank last among voters’ priorities: From August through early October, GOP candidates dropped $65 million on anti-trans advertising, according to a New York Times analysis. The hateful rhetoric has been deployed all the way down the ballot, in Senate races, statehouse contests, and state constitutional amendment campaigns.

I really hate that this might be right. It feels like a huge surrender to say we can't have certain candidates because even swing voters are too bigoted, but I do think this hurt Harris more than initial polling suggested it would. Bigotry mostly manifests as subconscious bias, not reasoned positions. Many people who would happily say in a survey "Oh yeah, I'd vote for a woman" will in reality find any excuse not to vote for a particular woman. I think a lot of people who said they liked Harris in polls at the last minute decided they wanted to go with the devil they knew.

I don't have an acceptable solution to this problem.

I listened to the bile coming from the Right for too many years to blame anything else for the abhorrent sexism. And it's not just the losses themselves - she polled pretty well in most spots but it felt like she was always behind the Biden mark set in '20. Biden wasn't a genius - his policies were exactly what America needed. But the head wind from Fox/the RW news is just too freakin strong.
