There are two issues that should doom Sanders campaign:
  1. Any candidate for the Democratic nomination MUST release their tax returns. No exceptions. This is going to be a major issue, and giving Trump an out is not acceptable.
  2. Any candidate for the Democratic nomination MUST join the Democratic party. I understand Sanders has worked closely with the party, and I understand he has local political concerns. But you can't lead a party you refuse to join.

He has the first covered. He recently said he will release 10 years of tax records. He said it at a town hall meeting yesterday. Elizabeth Warren has already released 10 years of records. She did so in August, 2018.

Edit: Sorry, I hadn't seen Innula's video. That is apparently the reference to the future release (I had only read of it). Yeah, he does seem a bit wishy-washy about it.

I hesitate to intrude in the Democratic Party's internal affairs -- quite seriously, I realise I'm commenting on something about which I know little -- but I don't think this exchange would fill me with confidence were I a US Democrat:

He's trying to pull a Trump. That's not going to bode well for him.

This thread isn't too encouraging, either, to my mind

He was talking against the seeming smear that underlies the constant focus on this issue for his campaign, that he is sexist or not a feminist, so he used the opportunity to show how he is not trying to shut women down but lift them up into office by helping them get engaged in the political process. (I also note that he is not alone, Kamala Harris had someone on her staff settle a huge sexual harassment case, for a much larger sum.) That also wasn't his complete answer, if the clip went further on you'd see that he talked about training and implementing policies that would address the issue.

The Democratic National Committee has made this a requirement for this coming election. You want our money and support, you must be a member of the party.

Thanks. I've now found the full exchange here.

It seems to me notable that he doesn't address the question at all in his initial response. Instead he goes about how much he achieved for the progressive cause in both 2016 and 2018, and name checks his organisation "Our Revolution," and that's it.

It's only when he finishes, and the moderator asks him, in effect,"Yes, but what about the question she just asked?" that he goes on to talk about all the anti-harassment training he's put in place for his campaign workers this time.

It seemed to me an example of the classic media training for politicians -- when you're asked a question on live TV or radio that you don't like, simply ignore it and use the limited microphone time available to talk about something you want to discuss.

It always makes me want to throw things when people do that.

I'm not sure which is more guaranteed to hand the Orange One a victory in 2020: Sanders running as a Democrat and losing the primary, creating the same scenario that tanked Hillary's bid; or Sanders running as an independent, drawing votes away from the Democratic candidate, and losing.

I wish DC and PR could both get statehood, but it won't happen, because the only way the Repubs can have a minority controlled government is by controlling the Senate. The neglect of PR after disaster is basically an attack on their very existence. I think it is a race war, but low-key enough that the media can ignore it.

Making either DC or PR a state would doom the Republicans. We need a sane conservative party to replace them, but because they are now really about white nationalism and neoliberalism - which is to say failed ideas young people realize will doom the planet - they have gotten corrupt and desperate. It's always going to be worse and worse and more and more shocking until demographics finally put an end to this game or the republic is finally lost for good.

I'm not sure which is more likely.

Joe Biden 'Very Close' To 2020 Decision As His Family Gives Its Blessing

My money is on Beto coming in with Biden to give us the retro Obama/Biden feelz but in reverse. Good luck with that; there is a constituency for that, I suppose, but that milquetoast status quo policy is not a winner.
Would not be my first choice but what counts as we get near the election is who is polling as most likely
to beat Trump. We need the biggest margin possible.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee made it official. He is running for President. Jay Inslee Wants to Be a Presidential Candidate for the Climate-Change Era

The guy is smart, knows what he is talking about on issues regarding climate change. He is popular with liberals and moderates and all those big tech businesses in the Seattle area, and served in Congress for over a decade. He is literally the only candidate declared so far with actual executive AND legislative branch experience, and at age 68, he is not too old or too young for the job.

His biggest problem is that outside the northwest corner of the country, nobody knows who the hell he is.

Demographics is already having an effect. The close races in Texas and Georgia in November show that.
Here is another close set of races, though it might not have looked it to people on the outside. In the FL 1st, in Escambia, Gaetz almost didn't get the county [and the local paper has a whole bunch of anti-Gaetz political cartoons, much to my surprise]. Also, in Escambia County, Gillam almost took the county votes for Gov.

Escambia is a bit weird, we're either very progressive or very conservative; there doesn't seem to be a middle ground, but because most of the county is rural, we're very red, or we were. I think its starting to change. And its a trend that's kind of notable, if not as spectacular as Ga or Texas in '18.

The DNC chair now has the ability to simply not let someone run as a Democrat if he doesn't think they've been loyal to the party. It seems likely that Perez and Sanders have already had a talk about this.

There is also the pledge they are now required to sign. They must agree that they will run as a Democrat and serve as a Democrat if elected, which means Sanders can't get the nom and then run as an independent in the general. Sanders has said that he will (or has?) sign it.

Both of these things were clearly aimed at making sure Bernie doesn't run as an independent in the general after winning the primary as a Democrat.
