New Mexico banishes Trump ally from office for insurrection

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico state district court judge on Tuesday disqualified county commissioner and Cowboys for Trump cofounder Couy Griffin from holding public office for engaging in insurrection at the U.S.

State District Court Judge Francis Mathew issued a ruling Tuesday that permanently prohibits Griffin from holding or seeking local or federal office.

Griffin was previously convicted in federal court of a misdemeanor for entering Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, without going inside the building. He was sentenced to 14 days and given credit for time served.

The new ruling immediately removes Griffin from his position as a commissioner in Otero County in southern New Mexico. He also is barred from serving as a presidential elector.

Elected officials, police chiefs on leaked Oath Keepers list

The names of hundreds of U.S. law enforcement officers, elected officials and military members appear on the leaked membership rolls of a far-right extremist group that's accused of playing a key role in the Jan.

We have spoken about extremist groups infiltrating the police. Funny how those interviewed for the article consistently either deny membership, claim they have left the organization or just wanted to learn about the organization.

“Even for those who claimed to have left the organization when it began to employ more aggressive tactics in 2014, it is important to remember that the Oath Keepers have espoused extremism since their founding, and this fact was not enough to deter these individuals from signing up,” the report says.

The organization has always been extremist and two dozen members have been charged in connection with the January 6th insurrection.

The Oath Keepers, which claims tens of thousands of present and former law enforcement officials and military veterans as members, is one of the largest far-right antigovernment groups in the U.S. today.

The Oath Keepers was officially launched with a rally in Lexington, Massachusetts, on Apr. 19, 2009, in the wake of the country electing Barack Obama as its first Black president.

But it gets even worse for them, because several of them requested a pardon from Trump, which can help prove their criminal guilt if Special Counsel Jack Smith decides to charge them as Trump’s co-conspirators.

While supporters of former president Donald Trump have accused the FBI of being politically motivated when they indicted Trump on 37 charges, The Washington Post reports that the same agency initially delayed their investigation into Trump’s role in January 6 and the attempt to steal the 2020 presidential election.

Since the indictment against Trump was unsealed, right-wing critics have lambasted the FBI, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and Attorney General Merrick Garland for exercising a “two-tiered” justice system that unfairly targeted a Republican presidential candidate. But according to the Post, the same players delayed investigating Trump for his alleged role in the January 6 insurrection and a scheme to stop President Joe Biden from being certified as the president by Congress.

Taylor Taranto was identified by group Sedition Hunters in August 2021 and has been living in a van near the D.C. jail. He was arrested Thursday, more than two years after the Capitol attack.

A conspiracy-minded Donald Trump supporter who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 was arrested Thursday near the home of former President Barack Obama, a law enforcement official told NBC News.

Taylor Taranto, 37, who was identified by online sleuths in August 2021 and faces a lawsuit from the widow of a Washington police officer who died by suicide, recently showed up at the sentencing of David Walls-Kaufman, his co-defendant in the lawsuit. The lawsuit accuses both men of being involved in an assault on Officer Jeffrey Smith on Jan. 6, 2021, which they have both denied.

In recent weeks, Taranto has been living in a van near the Washington jailhouse, according to his social media accounts, and has repeatedly wondered in online posts why he had not yet been arrested over Jan. 6. Taranto also posted a video of himself on YouTube inside the Capitol during the riot.

Earlier Thursday, a Truth Social account that uses the same screen name that Taranto uses on other social media accounts re-posted a Trump post that included what is alleged to be the address of Obama’s home in Washington and noted that the home is near a mosque. “Got them surrounded!” the Truth Social account wrote.

Nevada grand jury indicts six pro-Trump fake electors

A Nevada grand jury has indicted six individuals who acted as fake electors in a scheme intended to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election win, according to the state’s attorney general.

The indictments make Nevada the third state – joining Michigan and Georgia – to bring charges against those who served as fake pro-Trump electors after the 2020 election.

The six Nevadans charged are fake electors: Michael McDonald, Jesse Law, Jim DeGraffenreid, Durward James Hindle III, Shawn Meehan and Eileen Rice. They face felony charges of “offering a false instrument for filing” and “uttering a forged instrument.”

None of the fake electors have responded to requests for comment from CNN.

Fake Donald Trump electors settle civil lawsuit in Wisconsin, agree that President Biden won

Ten Republicans who posed as fake electors for former President Donald Trump in Wisconsin and filed paperwork falsely saying he had won the battleground state have settled a civil lawsuit and admitted their actions were part of an effort to overturn President Joe Biden’s victory, attorneys who filed the case announced Wednesday.

Under the agreement, the fake electors acknowledged that Biden won the state, withdrew their filings and agreed not to serve as presidential electors in 2024 or any other election where Trump is on the ballot.

Here's what I don't get: Did these fake electors actually think they'd succeed? I mean, everyone is at least monitoring the news on Election Day, especially at night when the results start coming in. Everyone in, say, Wisconsin is going to be keenly aware that Biden won the state's popular vote, and, thus, the electoral votes. And then here comes these "electors" putting in their votes for Trump? Everyone is going to see right through that! And then, when the actual electors show up to cast their votes for Biden? Pure pandemonium ensues!

I get that Trump genuinely believed his scheme would work. But anyone with at least two brain cells to rub together should have known better.
