The alt-right has co-opted Valhalla to symbolize where the warriors they cosplay as will go to. It is not surprising Patel made reference to it as he is deep in that toxic culture. It was so fucking cringe when he said it, but these clowns have zero self awareness.

The Nazis (particularly Himmler and the SS) co-opted ancient Norse/Germanic myth as a mythic foundation for their racial ideology, which was linked to theories about the original Aryans (nomads from around the Caucasus) whose migrations can be more or less tracked by tracing the way modern European, central Asian and modern Urdu and Hindi, via Sanskrit, all have common roots.

Warrior gods (Wotan and Thor in particular) were very important for this, as was Valhalla, since they promoted the idea of a superior, specifically Aryan, warrior race, whose ideals supposedly expressed a warrior ethos of loyalty, sacrifice and strength. For some reason, I couldn't help but think of Pete Hegseth, something I would normally try to avoid doing, when I typed that.

However, the Nazis weren't prepared, at least not at the time, to declare themselves an all-out anti-Christian force because their respective Protestant and Catholic religious identities were still very important to many Germans (that was scheduled for later, after Germany had won the war), so Valhalla became a shorthand for heroic death and eternal warrior brotherhood, detached from its specifically pagan roots.

Internet meme culture then inevitably started coopting things, with far-right and neo-Nazi groups using pagan and Viking symbolism, runes and references as cultural and political markers, which then spilled over into meme culture more generally, with people deploying them half-ironically and sarcastically.

Meanwhile, there's some traditional contention within Hinduism and Indian society more generally about whether Patels, from the Patidar area of Gujarat, are members of the Vaishya (merchants, landowners) or the higher ranking Kshatriya (warriors) castes. Both are high-ranking but Kshatriya is higher, underneath Brahmins, and someone like Kash Patel almost certainly thinks of himself as a Kshatriya.

So I wouldn't read too much into Patel's appropriation of Valhalla.

I once caused serious offence in a UK Politics group where lefties and the far right hung out, on condition we were all civil with each other (which the far right, I have to say, appreciated very much, and they policed their own side pretty well). John Tyndall, the founder of the National Front and then the British National Party, died and a lot of them were going on about seeing him in Valhalla. I pointed out that, since he'd died at home, in his sleep, that was a classic example of a shameful "straw death" so he'd have ended up in Hel's domain, not partying with Wotan and the boys in Valhalla.

I haven't confirmed this myself, but according to a post on Democratic Underground, Don Lemon reported that Tyler Robinson was a Groyper.

While speaking on his show Rumble, Fuentes, told his followers, known as “groypers,” that if they turn to violence in the wake of the killing of Charlie Kirk, he will “disavow” and “disown" them.

“This is a very delicate situation. I fear that this has set off a chain reaction. I pray to God there is no further violence. I pray to God that nobody else is hurt as a result of this. I hope that it stops here. It should stop here. To all of my followers: if you take up arms, I disavow you. I disown you in the strongest possible terms,” Fuentes said on Rumble.

Fuentes and his “groyper army” have long been critics of Kirk and as people curiously look for the motive behind his killing the old feud between the two has grabbed the attention. Kirk witnessed frequent attacks from the right for being too moderate. According to Newsweek, during the 2019 "Groyper Wars," the supporters of Fuentes' infiltrated and disrupted Turning Point USA events. His supporters had challenged Kirk on immigration and LGBTQ rights. Kirk, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, was labeled a "gatekeeper" of establishment conservatism.

Thanks for the extra insight into the Valhalla/white-supremacy thing. I knew there was a connection but not one I'd looked into much.

Still seems very 'sus' that Patel would bring it up. And as far as him being Kshatriya ... he can believe what he wants, but... not to be completely insensitively caste-ish (I will anyway), but he looks more merchant caste. That degree of subservient sycophantic deer-in-the-headlights strongly conveys a lineage of sucking up for profit, not asserting oneself through martial prowess. He looks like the distant offspring of someone that'd talk you to death over a barter table, not run you through with a sword.

I suspect that fucking guy in the white house must be laughing himself silly over this. Having it turn out to be one of his own trying to 'protect him' from one of his others... is a banquet feast for his ravenous ego.

OK. Let me get to the point, which is what the hell going on?

The thing about the murder of Charlie Kirk is that, in the places that are deemed to matter, he is considered a human being, and to varying degrees, the humanity of most of the rest of us is situational and subject to debate by people like Charlie Kirk.

To a supremacist society, most of us are acceptable losses. Charlie Kirk is not.

To a supremacist society, guns are allowed to kill most of us, and the pundits can debate how sad our deaths were after the shooting stops, depending on who we are and who our killer was.

But guns are not allowed to kill Charlie Kirk. Not ever.

You can tell it in how different the reaction to his murder has been, when compared to most other murders.

I think most of his followers would spin it as how he talked about freedom and democracy! ...in particular he loved to use the word "freedom" but didn't seem to think it applied to anyone who wasn't a straight white Christian man.
