This is an interesting read:

One thing that caught my eye was that he apparently tried out for his school's rifle club, but was rejected because he was deemed a bad shot. It made me think: What if Trump wasn't the intended target? What if he simply intended to fire into the crowd at large, a la the Las Vegas shooter?

I'm not sure we're ever going to know what his true motives were.

What I find myself wondering is how did some loner 20 year old barely out of high school manage to pull off a near assassination of a former president, and know the security weakpoints of the Secret Service well enough to even get anywhere close?

She does, and knows what to do to not get slapped down later in private while she waits out the money after the old fucker dies.
Given his financial/legal difficulties, I'm rather surprised she didn't break out her infamous olive green coat.

The way the news has it, the guy never tried to enter the Secret Service's security perimeter, so they never would've stopped and searched him or anything.

You'd think they'd keep an eye anyway on a building with a vantage point reasonably close by, but honestly I have no idea how they work, how responsibility is divided with the local police, or any of that jazz. Keep in mind that this is just Trump's ex-president detail too, he doesn't get the upgraded "official candidate" team until after the convention. Or, wouldn't normally - he surely has a massively upgraded team now.

I'll say this - in all the videos you can find from the crowd, there's a Secret Service rifle team on the roof behind Trump's stage and they look very interested in something or other over in the direction where the shooter was, right before the shots start.

He's wrong about the similarities, there is one big and important difference: the Nazi Party had its own paramilitaric troops called Sturmabteilung or in short SA.

They wore brown shirts and looked also quite militaric. Their purpose was to fight against the communist paramilitaric troops, to suppress people and to frighten them. From 1925 to 1930 they grew from 5000 to 60000 people, in early 1933 they were 400000 of them. The SA was not above using heavy violence, if they wanted to.

Then in June 1934 there was the Röhm purge, where the leader of SA was killed by order of Hitler and the organisation dissolved. He feared that the SA might threaten his own power.

An old SA parade in Berlin.

That does seem odd. SS look through our second floor windows (historic downtown neighborhood) every year to clock line of sight when Presidents and VPs attend the bridge crossing ceremony commemorating Black Friday. A flat roof, 165 yards away from the stage, seems like a no brainer.

I normally don't subscribe to Podcasts or other social media. But I also love cursing, to the point that I ended up subscribing to historian and author James Fells' history newsletter: "Sweary History with James Fell" in which Fell covers various historical trivia, always with a liberal dosage of F-bombs.

This from his post today:

I Don't Think it Will Make a Difference

But Saturday night was a big what the fuck moment. A friend texted me saying well shit Trump is definitely gonna win now, and then Sunday morning a family member texted saying the exact same thing.
Except I don’t think that’s the case. At least, I don’t think this assassination attempt will make any difference to his chances.
Back to the vibe check. The right wingers predictably acted like assholes, and most everyone else was just disgusted. Disgusted with them, disgusted with the shooter, disgusted with Trump, disgusted with the entire shitshow. I don’t think anyone’s mind is getting changed over this. People aren’t going to forget about Project 2025. There is still a lot of time before the election to warn people of what a Trump victory means and communicate the successes of Biden’s first term.
And Biden predictably responded in his usual classy way like the true leader he is, while Trump went golfing and didn’t give a fuck about the family of the man who was killed.

I’m not an American, but I’m with Americans on the need to defeat the mango motherfucker. So I hope it’s not a stretch for this Canadian to say that “we” have been through a lot the last nine years. The vibe is that this is just more bullshit that has happened. It’s not a turning point, and it’s not even that surprising. It’s not going to change minds. The last nine years have been so totally fucking bugshit that we are all “Oh well shit that was crazy” followed by “Anyway …”
That’s the vibe I get.

According to MAGA:
1. Trump is better for Israel than Biden.
2. Israel tried to kill Trump.
Therefore, Israel hates Israel?

Just trying to be clear.
