This message came through the Contact Us form from someone named Panse Walls:

Your site is not about virtual worlds.
The bulk of your site's posts are in a Politics thread, so why you claim its a virtual world site is confusing and very misleading. Your site is a political one parading as one about virtual worlds. QUITE DISHONEST and this one will fail too. Just wait.
The “this one will fail too” is my favorite part, since SLU ran for 15 years. I am ok with that kind of failure. I do appreciate the use of a proper subject heading. Poor form on misusing “its” though.

I used to get these type of snide messages at SLU but rarely shared them. This time, my IDGAF level is much higher.

We have virtual hookers in Europe?
Nah.... only in Second Life. But we just talk about politics remember?

Same IP as that dude angry about a virtual hooker in Europe the other day?
I am still convinced he was just angry because he found out his virtual hooker was a dude and just using "they are a liar" thinly covered by the whole money and welfare thing.

What else?
Columbo from the LAPD wasn't interested in this case: "To obvious", was his comment.

While I think contacting the forum owner is a bit of a troll / dramabomb, and the whole "this one will also fail" shows a complete lack of understanding of why SLU switched to VVO, I think we have to be honest that there is a kernel of legitimate feedback in the noise.

Part of the reason why I visited SLU less and less over the last few years, is that the PRS topics usually dominated the new/popular posts. I'm sure I wasn't the only one with a bit of political fatigue. That's NOT to say SLU was doing anything wrong. Community members will discuss what's of interest to them, regardless of the name of the forum or platform, and that's ok. If majority of posters are creating or responding to threads about politics, then that's what they want to talk about.

Users have the option to ignore threads, or ignore entire subforums, as well as add the ones they are most interested in to their favorites. Everyone can manage their own experience. It's like reading the news paper, I skip the sports section entirely and flip to entertainment while I eat my breakfast. Same with TV, there are lots of channels, but most of us only watch a few. Expecting forum content to only include items that interest one reader is a bit ridiculous.

Having said that, it's my perception that Cris would like more virtual world content and he's created dedicated subforums to provide people the platform to do exactly that. If they don't make use of those subforums, or create threads, or respond to the ones that are there, that's hardly other members responsibility. We can all be part of the change we want to see. And, if the community here prefers to post primarily in PRS and ZOMGWTF, then that's ok too.

SL isn't new. SL isn't evolving spectacular. So there is not so much to discuss I guess.
The oldies here, that do the most of the postings (which is not their fault) have seen it all. Not so much interested in ZOMG LL did this, or doesn't do that, or should do so and so. We have sang those songs dozens of times.
If newbies, lurkers and others want other content, they will have to participate and be able to coop with olbies rolling their eyes at times: Jeez, not that again.

And for other worlds and universes: I'm not in one of them, so I can't discuss them.

Tell them to visit the official forms and see how much of their content relates to second life, even when we discourage political or religious discussions.

According to Google, "panse walls" translates to "think walls", in Haitian Creole. Do I win an award for best irrelevant factoid of the day?

Cristiano, I assume that, coming in via the "contact us" form, you don't have this person's IP addr? I wonder if you can request it from your host?

I heard an interesting theory from a profiler on the NPR show, "Here and Now" this morning. He stated that the wannabe pipe bomber and the synagogue shooter were "looking for a mission". Then I got to where I was going and, like an idiot, turned off the radio. I assume he meant they were people with a lot of emotion and nothing to do with it, who had been equipping themselves for a while to ... take action? ... and when no call to do so went out, they take braindead action on their own.

I wonder ... I wonder. Could one derail some of society's meaningless anger and violence by sending out a national "call to action" that would attract these people to some productive end?

Hey, Panse. Please go check out Sine Wave for us, and give us a comparison of it's plusses and minuses to, say, HiFi. Thanks much!

Be the solution, dude.

ETA: and, Cristiano, please do not ignore the menacing tone of messages like this one.

Who says virtual worlds have to be digital?

America is already divided into two painfully obvious 'virtual worlds' "Conservatopia" and "Liberalandia" each with wildly different 'facts', rules, heroes/villains, quests, victory conditions....

I do have the IP address, it is included with the message, but they used some type of anonymizer, so it doesn't provide any info really. I didn't find it menacing, just annoying. They provided an email address but I'm not going to bother to respond - life is way too short.

An anonymizer, eh? If their intentions were good in wanting to see more of a certain type of content on the site, and less of another, while tossing in a shot about site failure, then why use an anonymizer?

I sense someone who already has a complaint about SLU/VV and I doubt it is because of its content, but the way it leans.

Interesting. Why would someone go through the trouble of using an anonymizer in a web forum unless he or she was up to no good?

Since the complainant is so picky about using precise terminology, I am just going to point out he/she mistakenly wrote "parading" instead of "masquerading". (Points only for them rhyming.)

Yes this is someone with a grudge. Probably a pretty recent one. Probably over politics.
