You two are making this thread political ironically, right? Like performance art? And not a profoundly malfunctioning sense of situational awareness?
See? Screeching. Halt.

I align with the median SLUer's political views. That is to say, I’m hard left.
AUGH.

Wanting a functioning mixed economy with an effective social safety net doesn't make you "hard left". That's actually a kind of center opinion.

Hard Left means you want to smash the capitalist system, nationalize industry, set up communes, confiscate mansions and yachts, stuff like that.

What you are talking about, is the Boogeyman propaganda, that is spread in the US once to often, to make socialism look bad.
Socialism has learned where communism went wrong decades ago.

Today's socialism stands for decent wages for everyone, social security not charity, affordable healthcare, housing, education, public transportation, strong unions, workers at least as important if not more important than shareholders, good infrastructure, affordable energy. Smashing the capital system is noncense. Guide and regulate the capital system, yes.

I think you deeply misunderstood my post, Sid.

You're talking about the moderate-left and left-center groups. Which is where most people who identify as socialists fit.

The boogeyman is referring to moderate and center-left groups as "hard left" in the first place. I realize that Adeon was using the term ironically, but the communists, anarchists, and other actual hard-left groups do still exist... albeit far weaker than the hard-right.

I definitely am trying to foster an environment with more virtual world content beyond Second Life. I've had to educate myself to some of the other options there, and I've also been reaching out to people in different communities to try to increase involvement here. I don't love the political focus here either, but it is what people want to talk about, and those with no interest in it can completely ignore that entire forum and not see a peep out of it.
Many discussions in that forum give us the opportunity to AMA conditions in countries other than our own. It gets out of hand occasionally but I appreciate a feed where we can post political questions and opinions that are answered by locals and that doesn't automatically fill with trolling propaganda. Thank You for hosting.

I enjoy that aspect of it also. I enjoy getting different perspectives, and also reading the opinions of people I like and respect. It is a completely different experience than just reading comments on articles from random people or forums/subreddits where I don't know the people who are posting. I don't mind the political side, I just don't want it to dominate as I think at this point many people are weary of political discussions, even if it has never been more important to stay informed and involved.

I always take input unless someone is outright rude and hostile to me.
I believe that you need to add more crushed blue, or red, velvet to your wardrobe on a regular basis.

What? You didn't specify what type of input and I'm being nice about it. :)

I understand people getting tired of political discussions. But the political situation now is different: unprecedented, grim, terrifying , surreal. Our democracy is at stake. Other democracies are at stake.

So it’s understandable that people want to come together to support each other during one of the most dangerous times in our history. ( Not that any of that is news to anyone. )

I'm not sure whether people are growing weary of political discussion so much as people are growing weary of the constant reminders surrounding us that the world is going to hell in a handbasket. But as dismayed as I am about the world political tide, knowledge is power, and I appreciate being able to share others' knowledge in here.

I miss the privledge and luxury of not having to pay attention to politics and not having it dominate my thoughts. I wish the problem were just being weary and not being afraid for the lives of others. My problem is the opposite. When I stop thinking about politics and try to focus on something fun like games or movies, even for just a few hours, I feel guilty. I don’t know that I could trust any forum or group of people that wasn’t focused a great deal on politics right now.

I keep myself informed outside of this forum. I have better conversations on politics outside of this forum. I do more than post in a forum when it comes to who represents me and my community. When I come here, I'm often doing more than a few things, and I'm rarely ''browsing the interwebs'' for more than a few hours a day.

No guilt.

I forgot how nasty you can get.
You make a post about how better informed you are and how you have better places than this forum to have political discussions and then want to play like I’m the one being churlish? LMAO.

Many of the people that post here consider this a primary social outlet. That’s why you see them post frequently about how much this forum means to them. I’m not one of those people, but I recognize that many are and a lot of them are directly impacted by the political upheaval going on right now. They’re worried about their own healthcare and that of their loved ones. They’re worried about the rise of violent nationalism and overt white supremacy.

Tell you what, you just go have those better conversations elsewhere. I’ll make sure I don’t see your posts anymore so you don’t have to worry about my being so nasty as to recognize how insulting your “I’m so much better” post was.

I'm saying that everyone is different and that it doesn't make them less trustworthy or interested (or better!) just because they may not behave in the same manner as you and you responded by ''bully for you, I guess'. Why? You took that personally?

Anyhow, by all means, put me on ignore if my posts disturb you to the point of lashing out.

I am extremely focused on politics, but sometimes I need a reprieve from the awfulness of it all just for my own sanity. I don't feel guilty for wanting some escapism. The alternative is plunging into a severe depression that makes me want to die. I am glad people have a space here to talk about whatever they want - I don't stand in the way of that. I'm just not specifically running a political forum.

Wow, an entire argument happened in between my quoting Salome and posting my reply.

I agree. We all have to have some escapism, or else we run into the ground. We still watch movies. We still play games. But having a place where people come specifically to hang out and talk would be wholly artificial if politics were not a key topic in times like these. My point was, I could not frequent a place that pushed that artificial atmosphere and I wouldn’t trust it. That’s the kind of thing you see at official company or trade forums.

My point was not that you stand in the way, but that despite having no intention to run a political board, it’s a bit unavoidable given the state of things right now. This is especially true for a forum with a large share of members invested in virtual worlds because a large number of the creatives in virtual worlds have health issues or other factors that places them in vulnerable social positions and thus they’re going to be more heavily invested in the consequences of current events.
