Much as I admire Elizabeth Warren, there must be some Democratic women under the age of 70 who are worthy of consideration for the VP slot, surely?
This is something I have been thinking about. Unfortunately, it is a complicated set of options. Traditionally, the office of Vice-President tends to be a career ending position. If former VP Biden is elected then that will be an exception, but he has had an extremely long and varied arc in the political life of the US. The VP tends to be the person who does a lot of the legislative dirty work of the President, and their personal views tend to get subsumed by the needs of the President. In many ways it is a bad career step and requires a technocrat rather than a charismatic campaigner. In the end the choice of the VP tends to give a small positive impact when the candidate is first announced, but in the end either do not matter or can drag down a campaign by their missteps. (And Biden is already prone to gaffs and silly mistakes.)
So far all the good choices like Sen. Harris or Warren have the potential to make a far greater impact in their current offices. This year the political conventions will be more subdued than in the past due to that germie thingie, and the press will not have much to focus on other than things like the VP pick. So this thing will likely be dragged out and amplified more than ever. In the end it will likely be a let down due to all the hype regardless of who accepts the nomination. Additionally, give the focus in the US on competent administration it is likely that Biden will go for a current or former state Governor. If so that will be an interesting ethics question as to whether or not it is appropriate for someone in that position to leave her post to campaign in the given context.
