Yes general panic ensued when I attempted to pump gas during our first foray into Oregon. The tag on the rental was in state to be fair. Oh and then we offended the attendant trying to tip him. Oh well. wachugonnado/

That's better than all the gas I wasted trying to find a self serve that didn't exist.

Why, if you don't mind my asking, were you particularly seeking out a self-serve rather than filling up at a gas station that offered forecourt service?

When we had a mix of full service and self service gas stations in our state the full service ones were about 10 to 15 cents more expensive. This was back when gas was under a dollar, so it really made a difference.

With UK fuel prices what they are now, self-service would have to offer a pretty large discount to make it worth driving any distance to fill up, I think. But at those prices, I can see the point.

I had just moved here from the south where every gas station had been fully self-serve for 30 years. The biggest reason was self serve is cheaper than full serve. I am perfectly capable of checking my own oil, water, radiator, transmission fluid etc. It's just that when I am working the last thing I need is grease embedded under my nails. or all over my office work clothes.

I used to work in a few places that served food and drink near the waterfront in Portland during Fleet Week (they invite international ships). Russians were generally fun customers. Brits too.

Something tells me that job applicants aren't exactly busting down the doors to this wonderful opportunity.
I dunno. Depends where the internship is, I suspect.

Sarah Kendzior makes the point convincingly in Flyover Country, and I've seen it argued of internships in London, too, that the growth of unpaid internships as a pathway into a first paying job acts as an effective filter on candidates' socio-economic background -- that is, having the resources (or your family having them) to allow you to live in an expensive city like New York or London without taking a paid job becomes a prerequisite

If you're fortunate enough to be in such a position, then maybe your trust fund or whatever will stretch to paying for the seat until you can find a real job.

ETA Or, if not a prerequisite, certainly a route into a fast-track first job with a big-name employer, rather than having to build up a resumé elsewhere and apply later for higher-level positions.

When I did Master's in Museum Science, the program that I went to specifically barred students from taking unpaid internships. Mostly to make the museum field see student work as having value. The museum field is often seen as elitist and locking working class students out of the good internships by not paying only bolsters that.

I was offered a "paid" internship at a major photography collection in Manhattan. For $250 a month. I declined.

The only exception to the unpaid internship rule was for international students interning at the Smithsonian, as working at a national museum helped them when they returned to their home country.
