Massie says House GOP leaving to avoid Hegseth impeachment vote

GOP Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.) accused House Republican leadership on Wednesday of sending lawmakers home early to avoid a vote on his resolution to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The announcement, shared by the office of GOP Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), cuts the final legislative week before the midterm elections short by one day.

“And there it is. Just as I predicted,” Massie wrote in a social media post. “They’re canceling Congress tomorrow to avoid the vote on IMPEACHING @SecWar.”

The Kentucky Republican added that this decision will “make it harder” to reach the required votes needed to pass a bipartisan discharge petition on follow-up legislation to the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which was passed by the chamber last year.

Gas prices are going to spike sharply in the next few weeks for variety of reasons, but the precipitating reason is Trump's Iran war of choice. People who rely on oil for heating their homes are going to face hardship as soon as the weather starts turning colder. None of that will help Trump's side.

Assuming free & fair elections, there is every sign that Dems will take the House and have a (long) shot at the Senate, too. But that's a really big assumption for now, because Trump & Co have been trying hard to skew the results. I fully expect him to claim the loss is due to rigged elections. The question is what happens then....

Killing endangered animals while logging a forest or building a dam would not be considered illegal unless the animals were specifically targeted, under a new interpretation of the Endangered Species Act by President Donald Trump’s administration that marks a sea change in how the landmark environmental law is enforced.

A directive sent to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees this week says imperiled animals or plants must be intentionally targeted for their killing to be considered illegal.

That’s a sharp turnaround from past practice at the wildlife service, which historically held people liable even for accidentally harming protected species such as grizzly bears, manatees and spotted owls.

If I were a ruthless logger, I would have a problem with this as a get-out-of-jail-free card. All that has to happen after I announce my plans to buy/lease some forest from whomever for the purpose of logging it, then up will step an environmentalist/ecologist (organization?) that says I'm going to endanger or wipe out some species and all my brilliant plans will become so many millions of pages of court testimony and no logs at all. This will be so because by notifying me of the effect of my logging, I cannot deny that the endangered species are my target, too. If my snarky thoughts are in fact realistic, I applaud Trump's ill-intentioned and pooly informed plan with all my heart.

Yes, they do. Barring any Republican fuckery, Democrats have a high chance of flipping both chambers of Congress. But we're all kidding ourselves if we think there won't be a significant amount of Republican fuckery.

Donald Trump is proffering a new argument for building his triumphal arch in Washington DC: it will be converted into a “top grade military complex” replete with drone and ammunition storage space and customised sniper facilities on the roof and plaza.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday morning, Trump claimed that his new plan came at the “strong request” of the US military. He said the 250ft structure would be able to “house, store, and have the rapid ability to use large quantities of sniper ammunition in storage”.

It's unclear why the US military would want to station snipers in the middle of Washington DC -- against whom are they protecting the area? No Kings demonstrators? Ducks crapping in the Reflecting Pool if it ever reopens?

Also, don't the US military have rules about not storing large quantities of ammunition and explosives in the middle of civilian areas, for obvious reasons?

Trump learned his lesson from the ballroom (the "integrated military complex" one), or at least he believes that's the case - which is all Trump needs for any go ahead. If putting an army bunker around the Reflecting Pool would have ended some of the criticisms he would have (and I still wouldn't rule that out).
