So apparently neither the runway lights nor the weather reporting system were functional at Montgomery Field, where the Cessna was trying to land prior to the horrific crash into a San Diego neighborhood. Why wasn't the plane rerouted to Lindbergh Field?

It's almost as if gutting the FAA was a bad idea!

The tapes show that ATC told the pilot well ahead of time that the automated weather was down, and gave him some nearby weather reports that weren't great. The pilot decided to use a GPS instrument approach, and followed it pretty well, but it LOOKS like he mis-managed his engine power and sank below the correct glideslope for the approach. It was his mistake to make though - as long as the airport itself is open, it's the pilot's choice, not ATC's.

This video covers it in pretty good detail:

Good video, especially if you speak airman. I was able to understand some of it.

One big problem with San Diego weather is that it can vary wildly from one mile to the next, especially where the marine layer is concerned, due to the topography of the area. Miramar could report visibility above minimums, but that won't necessarily be the case for Montgomery.

The pilot may have still been able to find the runway IF the approach and runway lights were functional. But it sounds like he never had a chance as he descended too quickly on final and clipped power lines atop the ridge overlooking the neighborhood. Which brings up another question: Were there lights on top of the power poles? Were they working? Would they have even been visible in that fog?

The results of the NTSB investigation should be interesting to say the least.

This is so affecting, especially with what's going on these days.

A village in Switzerland called Blatten was destroyed today by a landslide. Fortunately the village had been evacuated because a landslide was expected, but the one that happened was far more massive than anticipated, and buried almost the entire village, save a few dozen structures at each end. The surviving area on the upsteam end of the town though will soon be flooded by the now completely blocked river. And that's not the only problem either.

This video goes over it pretty well:

Video of the landslide:

That second video was one of his rare off-the-cuff ones; most of his videos are scripted and don't feature his face, and yeah I assume he records the audio with some kind of home studio setup that's different from what he was using out there.

I think the difference in styles is just an indoor-vs-outdoor-voice kind of thing. Maybe he lives in an apartment and doesn't want to talk too loud or something.

In any case he's an actual geologist, so his material is good. You can tell it's human made because all of the maps and charts that appear in his videos have source captions, which is not something a slop channel would ever bother doing.

There is absolutely no variation in the voice in the first video. It has a completely flat affect.

I am not claiming that this is automation-generated or that it is not an expert writing the copy, just that it doesn't sound like a human is reading the copy.

If that is, in fact, a human, his editing is horrible. It sounds like he has cut out most or all (I couldn't stand to listen that long) of the breaths, and has sped up the whole thing digitally. Might as well be AI.

And, honestly, I believe Mr. Geologist might have a touch of the 'tism, too.

He spoke faster two years ago, but he's always had something of a flat affect:

But it's still just his natural voice. He doesn't use AI.

He definitely needs to get some kind of voice training because when he is reading from a prompt he doesn't sound like a human at all.

But what I was responding to in that last message was the assumption that I was in any way implying that this had anything to do with "AI". You keep saying that and I don't know where you're getting it. I never even implied that was involved.

I used to wear braces as a kid. At some point, that included a rubber band connecting the top and bottom braces, which made it difficult for me to open my mouth. That's what this reminds me of.
