Kevin McCarthy’s top pick for the Jan. 6 panel is already trying to sabotage it

First, a plea: If and when the Republicans who serve on the Jan. 6 select committee do everything in their power to sabotage a full accounting, let’s not treat this as just Republicans being Republicans.

We are not obliged to accept GOP venality, bad faith and contempt for the public interest as just normal features of our politics, ones that we must all tolerate, because, well, that’s just how Republicans conduct politics these days.
This is thrust upon us by the news of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) choices for the committee to investigate the insurrection. One is Rep. Jim Banks (R-Ind.), who has already signaled his intent to sabotage the proceedings.

Banks released this extraordinary statement:
If Democrats were serious about investigating political violence, this committee would be studying not only the January 6 riot at the Capitol, but also the hundreds of violent political riots last summer when many more innocent Americans and law-enforcement officers were attacked.
Oozing with phony victimization, Banks added that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) created the committee “solely to malign conservatives.”
That's not enough, of course. McCarthy is also siccing Jim Jordan on the committe. 💩

I want to print this out on sandpaper and make Banks read it in braille:

Kick him off the committee and send him to investigate sportsball violence.
Didn't it say these were just nominees? And Pelosi had the right of veto over any of them.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is pulling his five Republican members selected to join the House committee that’s investigating the January 6 insurrection, following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to reject two of McCarthy’s picks.

The committee will have Republican representation from one member: Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump who was one of Pelosi’s eight choices to serve on the committee. Still the refusal by the leader of House Republicans to participate is sure to inject even more partisanship into the already high-profile committee.

“Unless Speaker Pelosi reverses course and seats all five Republican nominees, Republicans will not be party to their sham process and will instead pursue our own investigation of the facts,” McCarthy said.
Earlier Wednesday, Pelosi announced she was vetoing the appointment of two Republicans who objected to the certification of the November election, Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio and Jim Banks of Indiana, to the House select committee. Pelosi said in a statement she was accepting three of the five Republicans named by McCarthy earlier this week.
Jordan should be in jail, and Banks made it clear his purpose on the committee was to blow shit up.

Just like Rethuglicans to throw a major temper tantrum and take their toys and go home when they don't get their way.

More of the Trumpians' temper tantrums.

The conservative House Freedom Caucus is urging Kevin McCarthy to try to boot Nancy Pelosi from her position as speaker, a sign of further escalating tensions after the California Democrat vetoed two of the House Minority Leader’s GOP picks from the Jan. 6 select committee.

In a letter Friday, the far-right group asked McCarthy to file and bring up a privileged motion by July 31 “to vacate the chair and end Nancy Pelosi’s authoritarian reign as Speaker of the House.”

“Speaker Pelosi’s tenure is destroying the House of Representatives and our ability to faithfully represent the people we are here to serve,” they write. “Republicans, under your leadership, must show the American people that we will act to protect our ability to represent their interests.”

The motion is all but guaranteed to fail in the Democratic House, but it signals a stewing anger on the right towards the speaker.
Pelosi is a lightning rod. Keep it up, Nancy!

I read that yesterday, and I was thinking, WTF do they expect to accomplish with it? The minority leader can't choose the majority leader, nor the other way round (would that the latter were so). Political theater? Someone ought to laugh in their faces for calling Pelosi "authoritarian" when they want to to the highest authoritarian of them all. Maybe Swalwell can do it. He told Tuckums off.

It's theatre for their base back home. Soundbites for fundraising rallies and so on, and they can hope to be invited on Fox and become regular contributors there.

They can raise a motion and demand a roll call vote to use in primary or general election ads even though there was already a recorded vote for Speaker at the opening of the session. They are probably aimed at "moderate" Republicans, especially the 10 who voted for impeachment, as they did not vote for Pelosi but they will not back ousting the Speaker without a compelling reason.

eta: McCarthy might have to bring up the motion. There is a significant chance of the Republicans retaking the House in 2022. If that happens, he will need the Freedumb Caucus support if he hopes to be elected Speaker himself.

I don’t see why there would be a particularly significant chance for them to retake the House. Historically? Historically" is out the window after TFG. They're getting crazier and crazier, and consistently voting against things people really need.
I don't think more people are going to jump on the crazy train unless they slip something in their water supply.
Not after the pandemic when they need the stuff in Biden's recovery plan more than ever. The Republicans all voted against child tax credits and any other type of aid, just to try to deny Biden a victory. Their voters aren't all Qrazy MAGAS who'd die (literally) for TFG.

Consider how close the House is with record turnout in 2020. Add a new crop of restrictive voting laws and a round of redrawn House districts.

In 2020, the Rpublicans turned out a significant number of new voters who went for a straight ticket. But enough Biden voters (also record turnout) split tickets, especially in the suburbs, that Rs gained in the House and squeeked to a tie in the Senate.

Yeah, that was when they thought TFG was what he sold himself as. And before they started saying the quiet parts, not just out loud, but through a bullhorn.
And those restrictive voting laws are in for a big fight. The GQP shouldn't count it's chickens yet.
