The plot thickens...looks like it was less spontaneous than we were led to believe.
The article seems to me to be saying that the military chiefs were -- completely understandably, to my mind -- very unwilling to have troops inside the Capitol and wanted federal law enforcement to clear the building if that was at all possible. The plot thickens...looks like it was less spontaneous than we were led to believe.
Of course they are confused - how else would they have voted for the Trumpster?
Offstage - OMG, I have to read this, OK
Onstage - Blah, blah, blah.
Zoom, Zoom - Out of there
Oh, the poor babies - well, fuck their feelings.

Yeah, many Lord of the Flies moments there. We are governed by children. In all ways.
Ah, there's the answer to what happened to the National Guard. Trump replaced the Secretary of Defense for this purpose
That's funny. There were millions upon millions of disappointed people in 2016. We held peaceful protests. I don't recall storming the Capitol. We had far more proof of Trump colluding with Russia than he will ever have about voter fraud. The man did ask for Russia's assistance on national television. Fuck Fox and their making of excuses for sedition and insurrection.
In August of 2017, hundreds of armed white supremacists descended on Charlottesville, Virginia, calling themselves “protesters.” They were ostensibly there to showcase their deep solidarity with confederate statuary, but in fact they were experimenting with a new kind of political normal. For more than 24 hours, they marched, sometimes by torchlight chanting Nazi slogans, and attacked unarmed locals. Eventually, one of them killed Heather Heyer, and injured 19 others who, like Heyer, were there to counterprotest.

On Wednesday afternoon, violent “protesters” descended on the U.S. Capitol to disrupt the vote count that would ratify the 2020 election. Republicans planned to challenge these results because, despite an absence of evidence of fraud, they had committed themselves to the principle that Democrats could not have won absent fraud. So the protesters showed up. Capitol Police had ample access to this mob’s plans online. There had been plenty of careful media reporting on the weekslong plot to bring violent protesters to D.C. Indeed the president had been fomenting it. But again, it appears that nobody did a thing to prepare. Once again, the police seemed wholly unready for the prospect of a violent attack by violent white supremacists, despite the fact that the white supremacists hardly kept their plans secret. Initially it looked as though Capitol Police’s primary response was to put a temporary barricade around the Capitol building, even though we know how that all went in Charlottesville.
The rumor mill I catch has been saying that Chao was actually on-board with a 25th call, and only resigned after it became clear that there wasn't enough Cabinet support for it.I think the cabinet might be in the middle of a power struggle to remove Trump with the 25th amendment. I think DeVos might be a true believer in Trump, who was disillusioned by the coup, and wants nothing to do with any of this any more. I think Chao knows the coup attempt was wrong, but wants Trump to serve out his term, and then be forced to quietly fade away after inauguration day, in order to try to stop the Republican party from splintering into a million factions and destroying her husband's power. Chao might have been forced out by somebody who wants to invoke the 25th, maybe? IDK, I'm obviously in the realm of wild conjecture here...
