Up until now enforcement of the rules was not really strict over here. Government relies a lot on the common sense of people.
If we relied on the common sense of people here in the US, we'd certainly be doomed.

As it is, California is facing a major spike in infections, even despite the shutdown. California has been divided into five regions, and whether or not a region goes into lockdown depends on available ICU bed capacity in that region. My region has nearly 0% capacity remaining, with staffed beds in the single digits across several counties. Despite all of that, several of the local sheriffs have stated that they will not enforce the governor's shutdown proclamation.

It's going to get a lot worse over here before it ever gets better.

Getting COVID due to carelessness at this stage is like being an Olympic runner who starts the celebration 10m before the finish line, trips over their own feet, and ends up the bronze medalist on the podium.
Except none of these covidiots ever fully reap the consequences of their actions. No, they test positive, get absolute premium medical treatment none of the rest of us are entitled to, and it's all over and done with in a few days. Easy peasy lemon-squeezy. All the while, ordinary Americans are dying by the thousands every day.

I'm talking about you, me, the people next door, and every other joe average who was making an effort already, about not getting cocky and letting guard down.

A Texas couple married for 30 years who were hospitalized with Covid-19 were holding hands as they both died on Sunday, their family says.

Paul Blackwell, 61, and Rosemary Blackwell, 65 — longtime educators of Grand Prairie Independent School District — died just minutes apart at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, two of their sons told NBC News.

The couple contracted the virus nearly a week before Thanksgiving. “It really took a toll on them pretty quickly,” son Shawn Blackwell said of his parents after they began exhibiting symptoms.

Scenes last night at St Pancras, with people trying to catch one of the last trains north for Christmas before the new lockdown rules in London started -- rules introduced to try to slow the spread of the new, apparently more infectious, strain of the virus

Thread

While I agree the government left it too late to make the announcement -- only last Tuesday, Boris Johnson was mocking Kier Starmer for wanting to "cancel Christmas" -- I have no patience with her at all.

My mother was in her 90s when she died, and there is no way that I would have contemplated spending Christmas with her under these circumstances, nor would she have allowed me to even had I wanted to risk it.

Here in NL no passenger planes and no passenger ferries from the UK are welcome at the moment.

Sounds like the UK is in for a very hard Brexit indeed.
There's still hope of a deal, but whether there's a deal or not, we're in for several months of disruption and product shortages as supply chains get themselves re-established, and food costs, in particular, are likely to rise.

Anyway, we'll just have to see how Boris Johnson and his cabinet manage to handle the mess they've created for themselves, and the rest of us.

Not well, I fear.

Thread -- looks like the German authorities are really worried

this is also reported from other German airports: Passengers from UK flights that landed late in the evening at German airports are spending the night in the terminal and will be tested tomorrow morning or have to fly back to London (if there is stil an option)

Eurotunnel is also closed
