Ok, it sounds like there is a requirement to be online.

If it's initially, I don't care that much. If it's always that could be a problem.

And not because I can't get online, but because very often, especially on my laptop, I am using a VPN, and in my experience, Microsoft completely shits the bed when using a VPN. Store won't connect, One Drive doesn't always sync, etc. It's very annoying, but it lines back up when I connect again later at home.

If this behavior moves into even being able to log in, that sucks.

AFAIK it's only for installation and updates.

The requirement for TPM would seem to be a major hurdle, none of my desktops have a module installed, not sure about the laptop.
6th Gen Intel Processors and newer as well as equivalent Ryzen should have an integrated version. Check your bios for . . . things that are semi-randomly labeled.

I couldn't find consistent information on when TPM 2.0 started.

First check bitlocker, though -- "manage bitlocker," then on the bottom left of that "manage TPM"

My laptop haz an old (2nd gen i7 🧙‍♂️ ) which wouldn't have a TPM except business-grade Thinkpad's had extra bits -- so I have a separate STMicro TPM.

Gonna be fun trying to squeeze W11 onto the old beast. I already ran into a MiniSquish derp with Conexant drivers on one upderp -- fixed by clean installing windows again, not installing any drivers, then it updated normally. (always have an install usb handy).

So the newer hardware requirements might justify a new version number.
The new hardware requirements are the whole point of making it a major new release. Microsoft has been trying to make secure boot mandatory since some time in the Windows 7 era. They managed to get it on Windows RT (ARM) but not on Intel. The end goal is hardware that only boots operating systems signed by Microsoft.

they want us to update and they make it free but make it incompatible with most currently active computers?

people bought alot of computers at the start of the pandemic. They are not gona rush out to get another one. They will have to fix this or people won't switch over. The End goal and the current market does not line up in my opinion

Many newer machines will just need BIOS setting to enable the TPM. My desktop is fairly old so the TPM is a seperate board that was optional.

Apparently you can't dock the taskbar on the side of the screen in Windows 11. Which is also dumb, though I am sure it's less of a problem for most people.

I mean, I only recently started keeping mine on the left but I kind of prefer it.

I wish, but TPM 2.0 has been out since 2014. Unfortunately this won't be a killer.

That makes it alittle easy.. still trying to explain to millions of people how to acess their bios to flip the switch across a multitude of motherboards and not mess up.. seems like a tall order.

Yeah anyone who bought a computer new in the last couple of years, or bought any new motherboard in the last couple of years, ought to have TPM and probably just need to enable it, including pandemic buyers. This isn't prohibitive to them.

My several-years-old 990FX board comes with a TPM header, like most. But do I want to bother dropping $30 to $50 on a plugin module, or should I just wait until I actually upgrade my system which needs it anyway? I'll likely just wait.

LOL that's probably why Microsoft isn't doing it. Their tool just says they can't get Windows 11 and doesn't give advice. :D

If computer owners do the investigating and find out they can change a BIOS setting to fix the compatibility problem, it's their system or mobo manufacturer who should be putting the instructions on their websites.

I suppose small-time computer repair shops have an opportunity here to charge a small fee for a quick "Windows 11 readify" service.... ^^

LOL. The only "warning" I had from the compatibility test was that my processor is not supported by Windows 11.
I'm running a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz 2.60 GHz in my laptop.

Ok, reboot the computer.

Oh while it's....

Ok, reboot it again, but while it's booting, tap F2 over and over....

Ok reboot again but tap F10

Ok,.... Ok reboot ag..... No, try left shift this time.

Ok, reboot, and while it's booting, just start slapping the keyboard spasticly.

Ok.... Go buy a Chromebook.

If it's the ASUS 990FX I'd hold off. There's problems with the bios not co-operating with the TPM add-on.

For something that gives you a more comprehensive readiness result:

Eh, I can switch to oofy boot, but conversion to GPT involves wiping the disk AFAIK. I have until 2025 to be bothered.

{ETA} Winderps, you so crazy. Switching to oofy boot made it decide that the disk was GPT. LOL {/ETA}

{ETA2} SoL anyways, no "secure boot" option. And I'm running a haxxored bios that shows all the settings. {/ETA2}

Yeah, it said that about my system (bought last year) too. Coffee Lake CPU i7 8700k 4.7GHz.
So I went into my BIOS, and I saw that TPM can be enabled, but it also said "no security device found" which means I need the module. Fortunately my custom PC comes with lifetime tech support, so I just have to touch base with the guy who built it.
All I want to know is that I'll be able to run it at some point, and it looks like I will. The TPM module for my mobo is cheap, too, but Newegg is sold out of it "due to high demand" (gee, I wonder why? 🤔).
Did your BIOS not have the page for it?
