I won a radio station call in contest and the prize was a gift certificate. I ended up getting Breakfast in America by Supertramp.

Not really sure what the first single was that i ever bought, i guess it was something either from The Sweet or Slade, which were the best bands back then for me.
But i do know the first album i ever bought, which was Kraftwerk - Die Mensch Maschine (or Man Machine in english)

Still listen to it every now and then today, but never thought back then that i would!

Bought, from the store, with my own money, Heaven only knows, Bee Gees, Elton, Earth Wind & Fire maybe. This was the first album that I borrowed from the public library and recorded pirated with my newfangled HIFI stereo system complete with dual cassette players (only one of them recorded) ha ha ha:

disclaimer: I eventually realized my crime and purchased a copy.

"Blowing in the Wind" all the way back to 1963, I remember it because my Mom liked it too:

I should add that about three years later, my sister burned it because it was The Devil's Music. Apparently the road to hell is paved with light, radio-friendly prog rock.

The first single I owned (at the age of about 8) was Bye Bye Baby by the Bay City Rollers.

The first one I bought with my own money was Message in a Bottle by The Police, when I was 12.

ONE OF THE ODDER PARTS OF HEX'S CHILDHOOD WAS THAT HIS MOM DIDN'T EVEN LET HIM LISTEN TO FM RADIO UNTIL HE WAS 12. IT WAS A NUMBER OF YEARS LATER UNTIL HE GOT A TAPE DECK. THIS WAS ONE OF HIS FIRST ALBUMS (CASSETTE, USED) BUT THE ONLY ONE HE REMEMBERS FROM THAT USED MUSIC STORE TRIP:

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols - Wikipedia

I never bought a 45 because when I was given a record player around age 10 (an old Motorola from my grandparents), They gave me a stack of them. When I was 12, I started getting 45s from the jukebox in the truck stop cafe my aunts and uncles had.

The first 45 I HAD was by Rickey Nelson - "Traveling Man" on A with a B-side of "Hello, Mary Lou."

The first records I remember BUYING were albums from the Bargain Bin at a Thrifty's:

"Thoughts of Movin' On" by Lighthouse

"The Battle of the Bands" by the Turtles

Love both those records to this day

I just got to thinking about how my taste in music coincided with my general attitude/age. First off, I started off with easy-going and innocent Monkees. Then I moved to Saturday Night Fever...You really had to be there to see how much of a phenomenon it truly was I remember even practicing those moves, ll. We would do it as a group thing. Then, finally, I moved onto Van Halen, Nazareth and so on. I don't know that it was so much an expression of response against saccharine songs, so much as my own descent into things not considered right for children. I was drinking. I was using drugs, courtesy of a neighbor and such.

Then, again, I returned to somewhat saccharine with Prince, as a teen..

I think that so much of our lives or intertwined with music. I know for a fact that I can recall viscerine feelings given certain songs.

Wow that was a long time ago ; memory is murky .... I think maybe it was "Ticket to Ride" by the Beatles.

Wait a second, no, I think it was something by the Dave Clark 5!

This was clearly pre-Metal conversion, but I think the first album I ever bought was a-ha...the one with "Take On Me."

I also remember playing Sean Cassidy on my little record player when I was around 6, so this would probably be the first single I owned.

LOVED that song! Has to be one of my early childhood favorites!

All these awesome choices. I remember my first album chosen by me - The Beatles aka the White Album - I was maybe 11 or 12?
My first bought albums were in a batch when I was 16 and had a job; Duran Duran Arena, Howard Jone's album [I don't remember the name, but at the time it was his only one], Zoso and Dark Side of the Moon.

But I had access to a far bit of different music growing up. My dad was a Disc Jockey and my mom was in to classical.

Ever since reporting here that my favorite album was the Monkees, given to me as a present, I couldn't forget about the picture of it. So...I finally found it. It's not great....duplicated by taking a pic of it with a phone, but here it is in all of its glory. Wearing a KFC Finger-Lickin' Good shirt. What you don't see is the red striped shorts below, representing the KFC bucket. I was a walking advertisement. Egads at that hairdo, too, my mother wanted it short and easy. .But hey..it was the 70's. I am not going to bother trying to beautify it. This is it, warts and all.

You can kind of see the stereo behind me, upon which many of my musical dreams came true.
