Come to think of it, I'm not at all sure it is possible to swear in the official forums -- don't they still have that forum software that bleeps out words to which it objects (which is why, before they tweaked it, it turned the late singer and entertainer into Bleep van Bleep)?

The way I see it, swearing in an internet group is analogous to typing ALL IN CAPS -- that is, it's a way of emphasising a point that irritates some people, which is one reason I try to avoid it in public forums.

There is a marked difference between "you're a fucking idiot" and "I am so fucking angry right now". There's nothing wrong with a bit of swearing for emphasis. We aren't children. People who need filters to protect them from naughty words are silly as fuck.

This is the same corporate forum that has "bbw goth dom seeking naughty subs" type threads as well - so auto bleeping seems ridiculous.

Certainly, but some people would be irritated by both. LL's target user base for its forums is anyone who uses SL, which is a completely different user base from this one. All I'm saying is that, just as there are social contexts in which I find it no imposition to refrain from swearing, I don't find it any sort of imposition over the road, either.

A far more significant difference, I think, is that the official forums' restrictions on quoting verbatim from IMs and on personal attacks on particular avatars and businesses make it impossible to have some of the quite important discussions we have over here (e.g. much of what was said about Emerald and RedZone we could say here but not over the road).

That’s the all over the map part, which everyone has almost given up pointing out. And when we do, its very carefully, since it is against the rules to question moderation . (But at this point the Lindens know who is who and take overall quality of contributions into account.)

Yes, I was just using games as an example. Another forum I am on has automatic filtering software. Which is really hillarious because it removes spaces in what was posted before filtering (then deleted both words) so sometimes you need to figure out what someone was trying to say.

Exactly. Just as "I am so angry right now" does not convey the same emotion, especially if the poster only uses swears to REALLY emphasise things.

I am sure many would agree, but since Lindens started reading and participating in the official forums, my guess is most of us think moderation has improved quite a bit, tho far from perfect. It serves its purpose, a different purpose than this forum.

I know for a fact that some of the more devious forumites enjoy the challenge of provoking someone else to say something like that. Not that it’s very hard.

Frankly the "official" forum has several users that have a long history of jeering at the line while avoiding any real punishment.
