Yes, but take Trump out of the picture and what then? You're back to 2016, with what looked like a couple of dozen "front runners" at one point, plus added MAGA and crazies.
Not quite. They know what they want now, another TFG. Another authoritarian, maybe a figurehead (but he wouldn't know it). Maybe "president for life", so their positions would be secure, until he or one of their fellows the them under the bus. Trumpiness and loyalty to him is seen as a requirement for the party by the majority.
And all the ambitious Rs area already trying to be as Trumpy as they can.

Yes, the ones who hope to be in the running, or a number of them, anyway, are trying to keep their place there by appealing to the MAGA support base they hope to inherit from Trump when, for whatever reason, he's no longer a possible candidate.

When that day comes, though, when Trump doesn't control that part of US politics because he's no longer available as a candidate, then that changes the picture completely.

I don't see what's going to hold them together, I really don't.

At the moment, the Republicans are calibrated around their closeness, or otherwise, to Donald Trump. That's not so much an ideological divide between right and left as a divide between people who believe in representative democracy and the rule of law and those who don't.

Take Trump out of the picture, and that calibration is removed too. Why does any Republican politician need to worry about Trump any more? They need to worry about the power structure as it is, and as they hope to make it, at the point when Trump's approval or views have ceased to be a major issue.

There are clearly a lot of sane and competent Republicans in state government, as became clear after the elections and then the attempted coup. They can't be any happier about the antics of some of their number in Texas or Florida or Arizona than are the rest of the country, I would have thought, and now's the chance to start putting things right, since the MAGA mob can no longer be deployed against you.

This is what happens when the great khan of the Mongol hoard dies, and the hoard starts to split up into warring factions between the rival claimants among the princes, and they and their followers either head off their own way or start fighting amongst themselves.

The problem with authoritarian populist movements organised around support for the leader is that it's very difficult to plan for an orderly transition.

We've seen that many of these guys and gals aren't actually too worried about woke bureaucratic formalities like needing to hold free and fair elections and to accept the outcome, and command considerable numbers of supporters who are both armed and bonkers, so how do you think they're going to settle their coming dispute about who should inherit the US from King Donald?

Oh, Arizona you so crazy.

After wasting shitloads of taxpayer money on a really sketchy third party company the conclusion is that . . . Biden did indeed win.

But the flailing around is far from over . . .

🤪
The hunt for Obama's birth certificate, which went on for eight years, was the initial first run for all this. They're only just getting started for next time.

Idaho wants MyPillow CEO to pay for costs to refute his false election fraud claim
Idaho Chief Deputy Secretary of State Chad Houck confirmed to the Idaho Statesman that the office plans to bill the CEO for the costs associated with auditing the three counties, a total estimated at about $6,500. Houck announced the bill on CNN on Thursday.

In Idaho, former President Donald Trump handily won in the 2020 presidential election with 63.8% of the votes. But Lindell, in a widely circulated document titled “The Big Lie,” alleged that presidential election results in all 44 Idaho counties were electronically manipulated to switch votes from Trump to Joe Biden.

Seven Idaho counties have no electronic means to count votes, Houck said.

The attorney leading a partisan review of Wisconsin's 2020 election acknowledged this week that he doesn't understand how elections are supposed to be run.

The guy is a former state Supreme Court Justice.

We really don't deserve a democracy.

On Thursday, The Nevada Independent reported that Donald Hartle, who last year alleged that his deceased wife's ballot was fraudulently cast, has been charged with voter fraud by prosecutors for allegedly casting that ballot himself.

"At a November press conference, Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Consevative Union, named Rosemarie Hartle as one example of the 'hundreds of dead people' he said had voted in the election in Clark County. The Nevada Republican Party also cited Hartle's interview with KLAS Channel 8 in their voter fraud allegations," reported Megan Messerly. "Hartle told the TV station, which first reported the lawsuit, that his wife died at 52 from breast cancer in 2017 and that no ballot ever came to his house, despite a ballot for her being issued and received by the county. 'That is pretty sickening to me to be honest with you,' Kirk told the TV station at the time."
According to prosecutors, however, Hartle himself was the one who illegally submitted his wife's ballot. He has been charged with two D felonies and faces up to four years in prison for each count if convicted.

The maroons won't let this election die.

The Wisconsin investigation is continuing even after the widely-panned Cyber Ninjas audit in Arizona confirmed Trump also lost that state. Gableman has admitted he lacks "any understanding of how elections work."

"The latest subpoenas seek emails, logs of internet traffic, information about voting machines and data about individual voters. The scope of the requests suggest Gableman's team plans to spend months more looking into an election that occurred over a year ago," the newspaper explained. "Gableman's contract with the state was to expire on Friday. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos of Rochester said in a recent interview he would likely extend Gableman's contract, but a spokeswoman for Vos did not say this week whether that had happened yet."
The probe — which has been ridiculed for "comic buffoonery" and as being "fake" and a "sham" — apparently sent subpoenas to the state's two Democratic strongholds asking for information on voting machines they do not use.

Looks like Dominion needs to file some more lawsuits. For some more billions of dollars.

More election fraud found!

A fourth retiree from The Villages has been arrested as part of an ongoing investigation into voter fraud at the well-known central Florida retirement community. Charles Franklin Barnes, 64, was taken to Sumter County Jail on Tuesday night, and faces a charge of fraud, according to a spokesperson for the county sheriff’s office. Three other residents of The Villages, all reportedly registered as Republicans, were arrested last year for allegedly casting ballots in both Florida and their home states. Soon after, Lake County officials said they’d handed another six potential cases of double voting over to prosecutors. Though records show Barnes is not registered with a political party in Florida, he allegedly voted there in the 2020 presidential election, as well as in Connecticut, where he is registered to vote.

When I looked just now,The Villages is trending on Twitter with that story. Why now?
Well...

As the twitter thread quickly pointed out, "One citizen. One vote." is totally incompatible with the electoral college. If I say my vote for the President should have the same weight as someone's in Ohio, almost everyone would agree with me, but it's surprisingly hard to get people to realize this REQUIRES a direct popular vote.

Yeah, I don't think Boebert realized she wasn't making the point she thinks she was, lol.

I sincerely believe that the GOP keeps getting these women with no education or intelligence as some long term plot to prove women shouldn't be allowed to run for office, vote, or well, be anything more than baby factories and sex slaves for white men.

I agree it can really seem that way, but I think you are underestimating how much power conservative church ladies often have over their husbands. Most antifeminist men aren't isolated incels, they are married with kids to conservative women who sometimes even encourage their ignorance in the name of tradition and how they interpret the Bible. I've met "submissive" Christian conservative women who can be shockingly assertive with pushing for what they see as the natural order. I don't understand fanatical republican women at all, but I really get the impression they DO hold more power than you might think.

moving forward, let's focus on what it takes to win those elections. We can do that.
So, stop claiming fraud and just gerrymander and make skewed voting laws.
Got it.

Of course they knew it wasn't rigged, because they were sending forged letters to steal it.

Pro-Trump groups in Arizona and Michigan attempted to fool the National Archives by sending forged certificates of ascertainment declaring Trump the recipient of the state’s 2020 electors. The Jan. 6 committee now has those fake certificates, thanks to the secretaries of State for both swing states, Politico reported on Monday.

The National Archives shared the forged documents with state officials, informing them it would not accept the fakes. Representatives for the officials declined to comment on the documents to Politico, but they confirmed that Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs and their staff met with the Jan. 6 committee this past November.
