When UnitedHealthCare hires a replacement for Brian Thompson, they'll need to change the sign.
I won't be surprised if that happens.

We have a long history of civil unrest -- see The Everett Massacre | Everett Library, WA for an example from 1919 or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_Seattle_WTO_protests for one from 80 years later.

On the other hand, it is Seattle so the next iteration is anybody's guess. Nobody's making "Keep Seattle Weird" t-shirts -- we're so deeply weird there's no danger of it abating.

Is this something that happens often?

Although, I see that the decision was made in September. I wonder how many others are still in debt, though.

Is anyone else bothered by how many people in the media fumble over the pronunciation of Mangione? I mean, Chuck hasn't even passed on, is he already gone from our cultural memory? You're under 40 and you're this fucking stupid? Google it before going on the air!

In case you thought folks had calmed down ...

Flashing road sign that says, "ONE LESS CEO. MANY MORE TO GO."
I have not done it myself but those signs are apparently notoriously easy to "hack" because its essentially just a serial port on the side or something with no real security.

I know how to pronounce it thanks to Chuck Mangione being kind of a meme on King of the Hill.

I know how to pronounce it because I'm old. His number one hit dropped just about the time I started collecting records and recording stuff off the radio.

I hope he argues self defense in court. It would be interesting to see where that goes, even if it fails, which it would.

I don't think I've ever seen such a sharp contrast between the narrative that corporate media is trying to push versus what "real" people are saying online. Basically every big corporation, including media ones are pushing hard that Luigi is bad and unhinged for any straw of a reason they can grasp at. There was a WSJ article bashing Sanders and Warren for making an effort to explain where he was coming from. The Media is working very hard to undermine the fact that he will be a folk hero.

This incident also illustrates that a lot of our so called "liberal" news outlets are at best a bit socially liberal, but still very right wing when it comes to protecting corporations.

Self defense laws and where they go wrong is a whole topic in itself. Most self defense laws only care about the "heat of the moment" and often don't protect people who were responding to years of abuse. So they don't protect a spouse who was battered for years if their abuser wasn't a threat in that moment. They also might protect someone who played a role in instigating a fight if the "attacker" was a threat in that moment.

My brother (who just lost his wife in October to liver cancer) and I were just talking about this. My brother is livid with how Sharps Hospital/Healthcare handled her illness and rightly so (I'm not even going into it but what they did shortened her time here and cost them dearly financially).

The way I see it, I think a lot of people have a sense that something is seriously wrong with American society today. It's not just healthcare (which is amongst the worst), but it seems like every institution that we once trusted is turning into what amounts to liars and scammers. We have become a scam nation. Every single morning that we wake up, someone is trying to steal something from us. Every thing I buy has a hidden cost or a bullshit fee. I get a scam phone calls, emails, and scam snail mail or texts every single damn day.

I have come to realize I can no longer trust the press, corporations, the police, our courts, our government (politicians), our banks, insurance companies or even our frigging health care. The damn whole kit and caboodle has been stacked against us. They use government regulations and laws to keep stacking the odds against the average working person and they just keep lying to us and playing bait and switch in the press so we don't realize it's happening. We're like frogs in water that keeps heating up and will eventually boil every last dollar out of us.

My brother mentioned an analogy that I think applies. It's called the 3 boxes. The ballot box, the jury box and the bullet box. When we can no longer trust that our vote is counted we turn to the courts, when we can no longer trust the courts, what recourse do we have left? The bullet box. This is where I think that Mangione was. I don't condone murder by any stretch, but this is where I think he was coming from.

They have succeeded so spectacularly that I don't see how the capitalist ponzi scheme can continue much longer. Particularly if they scapegoat immigrants, since immigration is the only way the market can still expand.
Let's outlaw birth control, gayness, and abortion. That'll work. Foolproof. Nothing could go wrong.

Here's a dark take on population and capitalism...

They are working toward not needing our labor through automation. If they succeed, they won't be able to rely on our consumption, because we won't be able to consume without income. So they must have some other plan. It probably also involves automation.

What happens when they don't need us for labor OR consumption?

We will be consuming resources on the garden planet. On THEIR garden planet.

What do you think they're going to do with us?

. So they must have some other plan.
Their plan is to get as rich as possible while they can, and let the rest of us drown in debt like rats trapped in a flooded basement.

I think they plan on being rich enough to afford their share of a militarized force to protect themselves from the rest of us. Giving those that are naturally predisposed towards violence an incentive to target us rather than them.

The greedy rich using greed to turn the poor against the poor.

Also education.

It might take 20 years but we can double the population and make sure they are all so batshit stupid that they make MAGA look like MENSA.
