Luigi Mangione wins dismissal of terrorism counts in US insurance executive's killing
A New York state judge dismissed on Tuesday two terrorism-related counts against Luigi Mangione over the December 2024 killing of health insurance executive Brian Thompson, though the 27-year-old remains charged with second-degree murder and eight other criminal counts in the case.

Justice Gregory Carro ruled that prosecutors had not presented enough evidence to the grand jury that Mangione acted with the intent to intimidate health insurance workers or influence government policy, which would have been necessary to prove murder as an act of terrorism.
"While there is no doubt that the crime at issue here is not ordinary 'street crime,' it does not follow that all non-street crimes were meant to be included within the reach of the terrorism statute," Carro wrote in his decision.

Now, if a Trump official said the same we would all say "Oh, the pills must be working now"
What pills are you on? If a Trump official said anything approximating that, the Trump admin would find a way to build time travel tech just so they could go back to the past and make sure that person was never a Trump official.

Man arrested in Luigi jailbreak attempt

A man was arrested on Wednesday evening after he arrived at a federal jail in Brooklyn impersonating an F.B.I. agent while carrying a pizza cutter and saying he had a court order to release Luigi Mangione, according to a criminal complaint and people familiar with the episode.

The man, Mark Anderson of Mankato, Minn., was charged in the criminal complaint in Federal District Court in Brooklyn with impersonating an F.B.I. agent and is expected to appear in court on Thursday. Mr. Anderson was trying to free Mr. Mangione, according to the people familiar with the episode, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Well this is some good news.

Luigi Mangione will not face death penalty after US judge dismisses murder charge
Luigi Mangione will not face the death penalty after a U.S. judge on Friday dismissed murder and weapons charges against the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, in a major blow to federal prosecutors.

U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett in Manhattan said she felt constrained by Supreme Court precedents to dismiss the murder charge, calling it legally incompatible with the two federal stalking charges Mangione still faces.

Mangione still faces murder charges in a separate case brought by state prosecutors.
Federal murder statutes carry different legal requirements than comparable state laws, and Garnett said federal law required Mangione's murder and weapons charges to be tied to another crime of violence.

Stalking, the judge said, did not meet this requirement because it was neither "inherently" violent nor always intentional. Garnett acknowledged that the average person might be bewildered by the dismissal.

Mangione, 27, still faces possible life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted on the stalking charges.

Luigi Mangione shouts at judge in angry outburst in court: ‘One plus one is two!’
Luigi Mangione shouted at a judge in an emotional outburst in court Friday as a trial date was set over the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

“It’s the same trial twice,” Mangione yelled as he was led out of court. “One plus one is two. Double jeopardy by any commonsense definition.”

Mangione, 27, made the remarks after the judge scheduled his state murder trial to begin June 8, three months before jury selection in his federal case.
Judge Gregory Carro, matter-of-fact in his decision after a lengthy discussion with prosecutors and defense lawyers at the bench, said the state trial could be delayed until Sept 8 if an appeal delays the federal trial.

Mangione’s lawyers objected to the June trial date, telling Carro that at that time, they'll be consumed with preparing for the federal trial, which involves allegations that Mangione stalked Thompson before killing him.
