There are a lot of undereducated social media managers out there, it's not exactly a profession that is rife with philosophical and historical knowledge. Many lack the investment until later in life when they are trying to puzzle out how the world fits together.

Look at how every time Spielberg puts out a historical movie and people say "Oh, wow! I didn't know that!" while those of us who give a damn go "Huh? How can you be such f*cking idiots?!?"

How do you tell people you're really into sex trafficking underage girls without actually saying you're into sex trafficking underage girls?

The House overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan bill to support human trafficking victims on Tuesday, with a strong vote of 401-20 backed by both Democratic and Republican Representatives.

Among the 20 Republicans who voted against re-authorizing the Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention & Protection Reauthorization Act of 2022—legislation that supports programs preventing human trafficking and supporting its victims—was Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who's currently under federal investigation for the alleged sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl.
Also among the 20 who voted against the bill: Lauren Boebert and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Because of course.

Samuel Alito Gloats About Abortion Ruling, Says Boris Johnson 'Paid the Price' for Condemning It
The U.S. Supreme Court is supposed to be above politics, but I guess we aren’t even pretending that’s the case anymore.

At a religious liberty summit in Rome, conservative Justice Samuel Alito mocked foreign leaders who condemned the Supreme Court’s decision last month that overturned Roe v. Wade—a group that included Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, Prince Harry (sure?), and soon-to-be-former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who recently resigned following several scandals. Johnson had called the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs a “backwards step,” which—if you know anything about Johnson at all—is pretty humiliating for the U.S.
But Alito used this as his punch line. “I had the honor this term of writing, I think, the only Supreme Court decision in the history of that institution that has been lambasted by a whole string of foreign leaders who felt perfectly fine commenting on American law,” Alito boasted in his speech. “One of these was former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, but he paid the price.”

Of course, Johnson’s exit from government had absolutely nothing to do with his comments on abortion—and frankly, the workings of the British government are so beyond irrelevant here. But we should talk about the fact that a sitting Supreme Court justice is going on an international speech tour bragging about taking away human rights from half of his country.

And answer to this person; my greatgrandmother worked as a housemaid and then a cook for a rich German family back in the early 1900s. Sure, she got paid, but she never really got to see her cousins who helped her get a job - at 14 years old.

Not the same thing, but eastern Europeans were treated like second class citizens. But also, as I learned myself, even having northern ancestors, doesn't mean there wasn't any slave owners.

But most importantly of all? IF you know your ancestors -didn't- own slaces, then why feel guilty? I never did. I felt bad, because it was horrible, but even now, I don't feel guilt so much as anger at those Quaker ancestors who thought it was okay to own someone else.


ETA - not the dude sharing, but the assholes complaining about it.

She was on Graham Allen’s Dear America podcast this past Monday. After she claimed that the COVID-19 vaccines “don’t work,” she started ranting about how she believes that liberals don’t actually care about women.

“These are the same people, they’re standing up for women, they’re standing up women’s medical freedom,” she said sarcastically. “They want to force vaccines.”
Getting the anti-vax word out, go girl.
“They say men can get pregnant, men can menstruate, and I wish they would stop because now there’s a feminine hygiene product shortage,” she said.

“And then we have the baby formula shortage, so if they are gonna get pregnant can they please figure out how to chestfeed so we can stop the shortage on baby formula?” she said.
Trans folk caused the baby formula shortage. Sure.

"In our nation's 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump," the former vice president says in the 60-second spot released Thursday. "He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him."
While I agree that Trump is indeed the largest threat we have ever faced, Cheney isn't exactly a clean or pristine voice in the wilderness.There was a certain election in 2000, though Cheney probably wasn't really the architect of that, (Karl Rove was likely the man behind that) he has plenty blood on his hands and certainly played a very large role in getting us to where we are at now. I always viewed him as the man who was REALLY president and directing the majority of the most evil activities during that time. I often referred to him as Darth Vader. My whole Star Wars analogy is off in that Vader was a disciple to Palpatine, although his entire creation of the Iraq War certainly raises him to the level of wondering just who is more evil. Trump is who I would consider Palpatine far more readily. Star Wars analogy shot.

The problem I am having with this news is that it provides no insight, no redemption, no apology just a push for his daughter. Based upon his past behavior I truly have trouble believing that anything that comes from his mouth is anything other than self-serving and insincere, even if the broken clock might be right ,the clock has an evil past amd is highly unlikely to have changed.

Where was he in 2015? 2016? 2017? 2018? 2019? 2020? as Trump did his very best to destroy all accountability, destroyed interior departments, caged children, etc... What about 2021, or more particularly Jan 6, 2021?

The only reason I post it is that this is a former Vice President of the United States sounding the alarm, rather belatedly and for self-serving reasons.

In addition, I doubt that his words mean a single thing to a Trump cultist. They've long since disavowed Bush and company as RINO's despite the very fact that they adored that administration right up until its miserable end. They were always in search of a Trump and boy did they get it.

It is as if an unfortunately sized amount of the public latches onto evermore nasty and evil personas and must disavow the previous one. I hate to think of their next one after Trump. Maybe they will disavow Trump, as well and latch onto something even worse that slithers out from under a rock. It is always worse as they latch more and more onto fascism. I don't even think it plausible that there will ever be a return to pre-daddy Bush or Reagan years. It will always be worse.

US library defunded after refusing to censor LGBTQ authors: ‘We will not ban the books’ | Libraries | The Guardian

They voted to defund the library AT the library.

A small-town library is at risk of shutting down after residents of Jamestown, Michigan, voted to defund it rather than tolerate certain LGBTQ+-themed books.
The controversy in Jamestown began with a complaint about a memoir by a nonbinary writer, but it soon spiraled into a campaign against Patmos Library itself. After a parent complained about Gender Queer: a Memoir, by Maia Kobabe, a graphic novel about the author’s experience coming out as nonbinary, dozens showed up at library board meetings, demanding the institution drop the book. (The book, which includes depictions of sex, was in the adult section of the library.) Complaints began to target other books with LGBTQ+ themes.

One library director resigned, telling Bridge she had been harassed and accused of indoctrinating kids; her successor also left the job.
A group calling itself Jamestown Conservatives handed out flyers condemning a library director who “promoted the LGBTQ ideology” and called for making the library “a safe and neutral place for our children”. On Facebook, the group says it exists to “keep our children safe, and protect their purity, as well as to keep the nuclear family intact as God designed”.
The vote comes as libraries across the US face a surge in demands to ban books. The American Library Association identified 729 challenges to “library, school and university materials and services” last year, which led to about 1,600 challenges or removals of individual books. That was up from 273 books the year before and represents “the highest number of attempted book bans since we began compiling these lists 20 years ago”, the ALA president, Patricia Wong, said in a press release. “We’re seeing what appears to be a campaign to remove books, particularly books dealing with LGBTQIA themes and books dealing with racism.”
