I didn't even try to read the editorial from the NYT. As for the Kyiv Independent, I wholeheartedly agree because I've been saying this for a while. You have to stand up to bullies - and I think the world needs more leaders like Zelenskiy - ones who will stay with their people instead of running off to safety, or throwing them under the bus.

Hence my subscription to the Washington Post.
I don't support the Post either - in part because Bezos owns it and he's a shit person too. Seriously, my american sources of news are from comedians - they seem more truthful, and come with palette cleansers too.

The Guardian is my favorite source. It is of course British owned but they do have Manhattan offices and extensive coverage that feels less icky than the NY Times, Washington Post or CNN.

Oh, gods yes - the CNN article on the primaries yesterday was flat out the same sort of ton as the articles suggesting Ukraine has no chance of winning, so should give away their land and peoples to Russia, except with the establishment / progressive or magas, and gop/ dems

This bothsides crap in american news needs to be nuked from orbit.

Zelenskij responded to Kissinger and NYT, and oh boy is he angry about both of them:

"No matter what the Russian state does, there is always someone who says: Let's take its interests into account. This year in Davos, it was heard again despite thousands of Russian missiles hitting Ukraine, despite tens of thousands of Ukrainians killed, despite Bucha and Mariupol, etc., despite the destroyed cities, and despite the 'filtration camps' built by the Russian state, in which they kill, torture, rape, and humiliate like on a conveyor belt," Zelensky said before taking aim at Kissinger.

"Mr. Kissinger emerges from the deep past and says that a piece of Ukraine should be given to Russia so that there is no alienation of Russia from Europe. It seems that Mr. Kissinger's calendar is not 2022 but 1938, and he thought he was talking to an audience not in Davos but in Munich of that time," the Ukrainian president said, referencing the 1938 Munich agreement, in which British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain agreed to let Nazi Germany occupy part of Czechoslovakia in an attempt to avoid war.

The Munich agreement failed to stop Hitler from expanding Nazi occupation efforts.

The Ukrainian leader also suggested that Kissinger, 98, never would have suggested to Europeans in the 1930s and 1940s to adapt to the Nazi regime.

"By the way, in the real year 1938, when Mr. Kissinger's family was fleeing Nazi Germany, he was 15 years old, and he understood everything perfectly. And nobody heard from him then that it was necessary to adapt to the Nazis instead of fleeing them or fighting them," Zelensky said.

"Symptomatic editorials began to appear in some Western media stating that Ukraine must allegedly accept so-called difficult compromises by giving up territory in exchange for peace. Perhaps the New York Times in 1938 also wrote something similar. But now, let me remind you, it is 2022," Zelensky said.

"Behind all these geopolitical speculations of those who advise Ukraine to give away something to Russia, 'great geopoliticians' are always unwilling to see ordinary people, ordinary Ukrainians, millions of those who actually live in the territory they propose to exchange for the illusion of peace. You must always see people and remember that values are not just a word," Zelensky said.

He is convinced that after the full-scale Russian invasion, the world was not ready for Ukrainian courage because, in his opinion, many in the world had no habit of taking Ukraine into account.

“That is why I pay such attention to international platforms, addresses to parliamentarians, to parliaments, to the people of other countries, to communication with the expert community, with journalists, with students. We must do everything possible for the world to get a permanent habit of taking Ukraine into account. So that the interests of Ukrainians are not overlapped by the interests of those who are in a hurry for another meeting with the dictator,” Zelensky said.

On the other hand, the Munich agreement also gave Britain another year with which to build aircraft on a war footing. This allowed them to win the Battle of Britain.

It sure solved the problem of war with Germany though, huh?

That was also, after the Great Patriotic War began on June 22, 1941, the Soviet Union's explanation for the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact.

I don't have much time for historical counterfactuals, but there's certainly a very credible case to be made that the failure of Britain and France to support Czechoslovakia at Munich persuaded Stalin that they weren't serious about resisting Hitler, and not to be trusted as partners, thus paving the way for the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact the following August and the Nazi and Soviet invasions of Poland the following month and the start of WW2.

Had Chamberlain resisted Hitler's demands, European history might have been very different.
