Yes, this forum has one, and it’s wonderful but I thought I should let everyone know it comes with a few risks as well.

The good part? Unlike the SLU software, the ignore feature also hides quoted text and the users reaction button clicks. In fact, if they post, you don’t even see an entry that says “posted by someone on your ignore list” with the option to preview. They just completely cease to exist when you are logged in. As far as I can tell, if you are looking at new posts or forum view you might see “last post by ignored user” but that’s it. If you are in a thread itself, you see nothing at all.

HOWEVER if you are going to put someone on ignore, it’s a good idea to keep in mind that you don’t see quoted text, or even a place holder, if someone you ignored posts. So there is some personal responsibility in using the feature because at anytime you could be seeing only partial conversation.

For example, if Cris posts something, and I quote him and respond, you only see my text if you have him on ignore. So you might respond to me, missing not only the context of what I said, but the entire fact that I’m engaging in a conversation with someone else.

Have you ever been near someone talking on the phone, and thought they were talking to you, and responded? Yah, it’s like that.

So use it, it’s awesome and has all the things we asked for in SLU ignore feature, but be aware that at anytime there could be parts of conversation you are missing which could lead you to misinterpret things.

There is a particularly high risk of thinking someone is responding to you when they are not, you just can’t see the responses in between or the quoted text.

There is someone I had on ignore on SLU without notification to them. I think I shall use this feature again. No use mentioning the name but it sure isn't you Pancake. The person makes me irrationally angry.

It works great and I’m hoping it helps me better manage my experience and enjoy the forums again.

I have had to check myself a few times before responding though, when it seems someone’s post is really random or out of context, and remember there could be another user, or three, posting without me even seeing that they did. In those cases I log off and check the thread as a guest, to see if I’ve missed the context of something.

This forum does unfortunately show reaction buttons to your posts from people you have on ignore. It might be an oversight or just something Cris hasn’t gotten to yet.

Does it hide your posts from the person you've put on ignore?

Probably not, that would be confusing, and confusing. My mileage varies greatly here. It may be FOMO, or this gnat flying around my face, but I can't patently ignore a poster. Having tried it in forums, and in Second Life, I've found it surrealistic to know that the person is there, and participating in conversations and I'm not "hearing" what they say.

I didn't use it that often but when I did, I lacked the willpower to follow through except in the most egregious cases. I ended up seeing replies and had to see what was being replied to, though that doesn't sound like an issue with the new forum software.

Other times, I just softened whatever anger had caused me to use the feature in the first place and would remove people from the list, sometimes to my regret, other times seeing I had just overreacted.

However, and this is a big however, if someone is disturbing your reading to the point where you wish to leave? Yeah, block their ass. I would much prefer that to losing longtime and good posters. We have lost posters who still haven't come back because of that very thing. That seems like turning it all over to those that are shitty people. I am happy that some have made their way back. :)

There ARE some people who ALWAYS deserve the ignore feature. They know who they are.

The scroll wheel on my mouse is my ignore button.
Discussions can become complicated when you have one or more participants on ignore.

I've put a couple or so of people on ignore in the past, but only for a few days. It was simply to give myself a mental break. Very rarely, though. As Sid said, I can just scroll past.

You wouldn't be here if you had Pancake on ignore; VV ignore feature ignores threads started by the ignoree as well.

Double edged sword, this one. Ah well, my blood pressure is more important.

The only time I have used Ignore in SLU was for people who made blatantly racist, sexist, or homophobic statements. So it never really impacted day-to-day discussions.

That one you will probably have to live with. The reactions are a third party add on - I imagine it would require a lot of db overhead to check every one of them every time they are displayed.

I only put someone on ignore once, as far as I can recall. They were a pure troll who never posted anything real. I don't even recall who it was now.

It takes a lot to get me to put someone on ignore. I think I've only done that to one person on SLU because he was just that toxic. But, yeah, usually my curiosity gets the better of me and I have to have a peek.

I am not seeing ignored people’s reactions on other posts, when I click the show all. I think that part works.

I haven’t seen their reactions on my posts either, but maybe they aren’t reacting. I’ll take your word for it.

I wonder if what's-his-name will find his way here. Blubber(?)
I muted someone  in Second Life once, for two days, and could see him furiously typing at me but couldn't see the text. Honestly, I felt silly, and disconnected, and finally decided I could unmute him and  . The experience ruined me beyond being willing to mute or ignore anyone anywhere ever again. Except Facebook of course, I totally unfollow people on Facebook, and somehow that's okay. :geek:

There's few things funnier than convincing someone you've (accidentally?) muted them, when you haven't.

EDIT: Probably most especially in SL.
