I live there. You are correct.I split my time between San Fransisco, Massachusetts, and rural Indiana. There are VERY MUCH red areas, and blue areas, with radically different thinking on even basic issues. It does however break down more to urban verses rural than any arbitrary boundary. The literally isolated and insolated rural areas are where the Repugs thrive.
I don't mean this insultingly. But in rural areas life is more about surviving than thriving - often on farms that either turn a profit or the family business dies. In rural towns, the biggest struggle is finding work if you're not on a farm. And kids have to commute on buses sometimes for a couple of hours per day because all of the smaller towns consolidated schools. If you're lucky, you're within range of a cell tower because there are large areas, some hidden in valleys, where you'll need an act of god to get a signal.
It's not that these people are stupid. Most are not - but there is a challenge in getting educated. Especially on farms if the school boy/girl is needed to help with the harvest instead of studying.
There is another challenge with respect to information. Cable has spread pretty far, and some municipals even have their own but in wide stretches of Western Nebraska, for example, you'd better have a satellite dish and pray for clear weather. It's understandable why conservative corporations like Sinclair and Ruddy (Newsmax), etc have found such a wide and fertile ground for their brand of intellectual poison.
