Probably Brits are more aware of Sikhism than they are in North Carolina, but it seems extraordinary that the campus police weren't aware of the significance of a Sikh's kirpan and why he'd be unwilling to let them handle it like an ordinary knife.

Requiring gun owners to carry third party insurance for their weapons, to compensate victims for things like them getting stolen and used in a crime, would do wonders for improving storage and reducing kids shooting each other.
When I encounter someone claiming to be a "responsible gun owner", I like to ask them if they have this type of gun-liability insurance for their weapons.

When they start arguing against such an insurance, it tells me that they are, in fact, not "responsible gun owners".

This is the USA. Where many police in many places aren't aware of basic human rights, Constitutional rights, and most details of most religions.

It's also just lazy... the cop probably had a phone on them and could have just looked up what it was and the law around it. It's not like the cop was in any immediate danger.

Yes, but it's a university campus, which -- even in North Carolina, I would have thought -- is likely to have a Sikh community of some size, and I'd have thought someone could have made sure the campus police knew about kirpans and respecting the religious and cultural sensitivities of people who wear them.

But they do know the detail that good American Christians nowadays carry at least a gun or two.

You would think..even in North Carolina. I live here and I know there are plenty of intelligent, educated, empathetic human beings. But campus police are probably hired because they are willing to get less pay, they aren't really qualified to be "regular" police, they love the idea of policing, they don't have college degrees, some probably are intimidated by if not jeered by students, and they aren't required to understand any of the people they are supposed to be policing. I am sure there are some campus cops who are great, but equally sure there are some who are not.
