I bet he thought it was funny... a lot of boomers and edge lords act like it's just impossible to tell jokes without bullshit like that.
Yeah, well I'm a boomer and I'd toss his ass right out of my house for saying something like that. :shakefist: Boomer or not, he's barely disguised insensitive racist.

Same, except I have an apartment.
I am so tired of these generational bad assumptions.

Related, I think :
Fortunately, my local Member of Parliament is a thoroughly decent guy who always stood up to the Corbynite left, but the only reason I -- and, I think, a lot of other people -- remained in the party while Corbyn was in charge was to try to vote Corbyn and his supporters out.

Fortunately, the party's current leadership, under Keir Starmer, things have changed greatly, as Margaret Hodge explained earlier this year

but the sad truth is that there's always been a tradition of antsemitism on the Left, and particularly the populist left, in Britain as elsewhere

I think some people who are prone to conspiracy thinking embrace Rothschild banking type conspiracy theories without realizing their anti-sematic origin. Of course, some are aware, and dance around the topic.

I think it's also important to note that you can criticize a government without making it about demographics but many people seem to find it hard to keep these things separate. Fair criticism of the Israeli and Chinese governments for example seem to often bleed into completely unjust and bigoted attacks on Jewish people and Asians. I really fear what might happen to Asian friends if tensions got much higher between the West and China...

I apologize for the sweeping generalization. Attitudes about racial issues are quite different between generations but that doesn't mean nearly all boomers have that mentality, or that all younger people know better. I think Millennial perceptions of baby boomers are further skewed by the fact that conservatives have a lot more kids than liberals, which means a very sizable majority of white Millennials were raised by proud Trumpers.

I would point out the millennials who think that, that he Charlottesville tiki torch Nazis were not boomers. Nor is James O'Keefe or any of the leaders of thy white supremacist groups, nor are a majority of their members (as far as one can tell from their matches, etc).
It would be nice to think that white supremacy would lessen or die with the passing of one generation, but it's not so.

From the data I've seen (Pew research data in particular), casual racism is more common in older generations but the younger people who are into it are often more radical... I actually think people 25 and under are less casually racist than people in either of our age groups, but more likely to be full on fascists. And yes, I've met some of them... I recently left a discord server because it was literally overrun with young edgelords who were more than casually racist.

The Left's Jewish Problem: Jeremy Corbyn, Israel and Anti-Semitis, by Dave Rich, traces the history of the British left's changing attitudes to Israel and the Palestinians since 1948, and the way Tony Blair's decision to join the invasion of Iraq both brought together British leftists and Middle-Eastern Islamists from Hamas and Hezbollah, with the far left coalition behind the Stop the War Coalition (including Jeremy Corbyn) finding themselves at the head of a hugely popular mass movement.

He also makes the point -- which I think is really important, and is one reason why I distrust left populism so much -- that

the left has its own specific forms of antisemitism that are not fascist or xenophobic, but are a distorted reading of the left’s own commitment to freedom and emancipation. This antisemitic version of left-wing politics is what led German social democrat August Bebel to warn against a ‘socialism of fools’. It feeds on the fact that antisemitism differs from other forms of racism because it uses conspiracy theories to claim that Jews are a powerful, controlling influence in society. Whereas racism tends to depict non-white people as dirty, poor, diseased and even subhuman, antisemitism accords Jews massive power, wealth, political influence and media control (Nazism did both, by comparing Jews to rats and vermin while also claiming that there was a global Jewish conspiracy). Antisemitism promises to be a liberating politics that can free the world from the hidden hand of Jewish power. Socialism claims the same thing, but with global capital as its nebulous foe.

NPR’s Boise State Public Radio reports that it’s unclear whether Lisa Leisy, a local official for Idaho Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin’s gubernatorial campaign, has retained her position after she sent a tweet complaining about a “black only” Hershey’s commercial Monday. The holiday ad launched in late 2020 and features a Black family. Wrote Leisy, “I don’t support the new and improved #Hersheys #christmas black only commercial. Classic #commercial and they ruined it.”

Sure is a horrible, offensive commercial.

That was the whole "Age of Aquarius" thinking in the '60s and '70s where so many people figured all that bad karma would be washed away when the hippies had the reins of power.
