Seriously: if they weren't there to protect the school's students, literally what were they there to do?

Maybe the answer legitimately is "nothing". After all, Parkland has been the only mass shooting at a school thus far where the shooter was able to use up all of his ammo and then just leave the scene, despite police being present on-site. He went to the mall and got some food.

I am sure their duty is to protect the school's students and staff, and other civilians. However, it doesn't necessarily follow that they have a duty, in either civil or criminal law, to protect people by interposing their bodies between them and an active shooter, which is what "shield" suggests to me (the link won't open for me, because I'm in the wrong country and it doesn't seem to like my VPN, so I can't read the details).

Nope. Use of the word "shield" in that article was strictly metaphorical:

Bloom ruled that the two agencies had no constitutional duty to protect students who were not in custody.

That doesn't surprise me particularly -- the law is pretty much the same in the UK, though a recent case suggests that in some circumstances the police may be at risk of actions under article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights (right to life): Case Comment: Michael & Ors v Chief Constable of South Wales Police & Anor [2015] UKSC 2.

As an aside, what is with the overuse of the word "literally" these days? It's, like, literally the most overused word, like, since "like".
