I realize it might at first sound like this rant belongs in the tech section, but I can't even do that because the subject is necessarily political, so here it goes: OMG YouTube WTactualF is going on with the "Prager U" ads????
Okay look....not long ago I used to whine and moan, only half-jokingly, about those ridiculous Udemy Guy ads I was always getting. I mean, here's the thing: on YouTube, I watch a whole heck of a lot of Blender-related content. And if you do too, you will have constantly seen Udemy ads where some guy is like "Your drawings would look great in 3D. You know, you should check out this online Blender course from Udemy..." or occasionally, "Making your own games is easier than you think. You should check out this online Unity course from Udemy...". Sometimes I see some commercials for 3D printers; but those Udemy ads are more prolific by far.
Now, even though I'm not interested in 3D printing, and even though I would rather literally gouge out my eyes with ballpoint pen than sign up for a Udemy course, at this point at least, I really can't complain about getting those ads because YouTube pretty much has me nailed as being in their target demographic: I'm watching all these Blender videos, and in point of fact I do pay for online Blender classes (from someone who sure as hell isn't Udemy), meaning they correctly deduced that I am or was recently in the market for classes of that type. Score one for the algorithms.
So now, since YouTube nailed me so well when delivering those Udemy ads, I'm wondering what on Earth I ever must've done to deserve to be served these Prager U videos now, which I've started getting over the last two weeks or so.
According to Wikipedia, PragerU is short for "Prager University"; but (kinda like Trump University), it's not actually a school of any kind - it's just a conservative YouTube channel filled with old white males giving these little 5-minute lectures about how nationalism is a good thing, or how leftists are the real racists, or how a $15 minimum wage would bring about the end of civilization, and other such old-white-male jibberjabber. For the life of me, I can't understand why YouTube thinks I would be interested in this. Unlike Blender content, which I admittedly binge on more or less constantly, the only political thing I watch on YouTube at all, so far as I can think of, is Last Week Tonight - but I last watched that like a month ago, and unless I'm just completely confused about everything I'm pretty sure John Oliver is liberal, to like a nearly comical degree even. So where does YouTube go about thinking I want to listen to right-wing boilerplates?
And the weirdest thing about it is, these little five-minute clips are appearing where advertisements appear - at the beginnings of videos I want to watch. But like, they're very clearly not "ads" FOR the PragerU channel, they're just....the channel's actual, normal content, these short conservative propaganda lectures. Except of course since the system believes they're "ads" you're forced to watch at least the beginnings of them, before you're allowed to get on with watching the videos you actually want to watch. The people who run this channel have dishonestly packaged some of their videos as "ads" and are using YouTube's ad service to push that content onto viewers who aren't voluntarily seeking it out, and apparently YouTube is okay with that.
