Corrected that for that poor undereducated Murrican Bret. If the Ashkenazim have any advantage over average Murricans it is behavioural, not genetic. Judaism is a book religion. Male Jews are tought from childhood on to read and interpret the holy scripture - in short they are tought using their brains. In the past this has lead to an average higher education level compared to their contemporaries which the average population only recently managed to catch up to thanks to public schooling. It propably holds true for the Sephardim as well, but we don't notice. The Ashkenazim have all those Nobel price winners while the Sephardim have not, but what is the reason behind this? Actually it is quite simple: The Ashkenazim just were lucky enough to live embedded in Western European/Slavic cultures which happened to have all the 1st tier academic institutes in the last 200 of years or so.

I just spewed out those lines without looking up anything on the topic. Why? Because those few silly reasons the author might have missed instantly crossed my mind. The reason I was able to do so is called education* and is essentially the same thing I suspect to be the only benefit the Ashkenazim had.

*spelled E D U C A T I O N; Look it up, Bret! It is a pretty convenient thing to have and you could try asking your political representative to make it available for your folks as well.

Hypothetically, religious Jews also selected for reading ability. If you were unable to stand up and read your portion of the Torah when you came of age (13), you weren't a man, and thus not able to start a family. I'm not aware if anyone has actually studied this to see if there is a genetic component to reading ability vs. social encouragement.

Not just males, at least for Reform Jews, as evidenced not just by my family's views but that there are female rabbis and cantors. Conservative Judaism, too ( I don't know as much about where the Orthodox stand on women and education; probably not as important as for men, but not, forbidden, afaik).

I've known since my college days, back when Eysenck and Jensen were writing about race and IQ, how dubious are the scientific bases of both concepts, simply because I read round subjects I find interesting, and some 40 or 50 years later, now we know so much more about genetics, anything resembling racial science and eugenics looks even more dubious.
