But about 80%, as I understand it, of US stocks are owned by institutional investors -- pensions funds, insurance companies, banks, charitable trusts and so on -- and no matter who owns them, stocks and shares represent assets against which you can borrow.

"Institutional investors" include things like investment funds, pension funds, and charitable endowments. They don't generally borrow against their holdings. They are assets held in trust for someone else, and so are not supposed to take undue risk with them. Borrowing against investments increases risk, because the investment can do down, while the debt does not.

Investors who have "margin" accounts with a brokerage, or who pledge stocks and bonds as security for a bank loan *can* borrow against them, but that is typically limited to 50% or less. Those sorts of assets fluctuate in value more than, say a home or a car, so lenders aren't willing to loan as much. But that is a case of an individual borrowing against their own assets, not someone else's which they manage in trust.

I still haven't made it more than 30 seconds into the debate. My head explodes into rageface swirling knives and pangolins, and I get an uncontrollable urge to defecate on the balcony of the one MAGA neighbor in this apartment complex. I once heard the neighbor sounding supremely sad while he was talking to a buddy on the phone about how he thought Trump wasn't gonna win this one. But I digress...

I still can't fathom why people would vote for Trump. He's been this way for as long as I've been aware of him (1987), just a repugnant excuse for a human.

Joe is a saint for having the patience to stand at the debate podium for 90 minutes while that fat fucking bloviating man-pustule spouted his torrent of verbal diarrhea at us. I hope to God we don't have to endure a second debate, unless someone can mute Trump's mic at will. Because fuck him.

Yeah, Trump pretty much pussed out and decided he didn't want to play in a format that could easily mute him when it's not his turn to speak.

Since now more than ever, The Donald seems to be reprising his Greatest Hits, he was expecting to intimidate Biden physically at the next debate and doing the debate as a virtual one makes that impossible. The second debate was to be in a town-hall format, which would have allowed Trump to stalk Biden the way he did Hillary Clinton. Although Trump's ratings vis-a-vis Clinton's went down after each debate, given that he enjoyed trying to intimidate Clinton and views the attempt as a success, he sees no opportunity for a similar success in a virtual second debate. Poor Donny.
