On this day in history, a member of a conspiracy to kill the protestant King James I and the entirety of the House of Lords and replace them with a properly-Catholic autocracy was discovered and arrested, and 400 years after his execution somehow became a commercialized symbol for anarchic freedom-fighting against fascism.

USOC is pulling the plug on USA Gymnastics

The U.S. Olympic Committee is moving to revoke USA Gymnastics' status as the governing body for the sport at the Olympic level, meting out the nuclear option to an organization that has botched its own reorganization in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal involving former team doctor Larry Nassar.

In an open letter to the gymnastics community Monday, USOC CEO Sarah Hirshland said "you deserve better," and that the challenges facing USA Gymnastics are more than it is capable of overcoming as currently constructed.

The organization, even with a newly constituted board of directors, made repeated mistakes after the revelations Nassar molested Olympians while working as a volunteer.

Those included the botched hiring of a program coordinator and an interim CEO to replace Kerry Perry, who lasted barely nine months on the job after replacing Steve Penny.

Penny — named as a co-defendant in several civil lawsuits filed by former elite gymnasts— stepped down in March 2017. He was arrested last month and charged with destroying or hiding documents related to Nassar's activities at the Karolyi Ranch, the ex-national training center near Huntsville, Texas, where a number of gymnasts said Nassar abused them.

The organization named Perry as Penny's replacement but her ineffectual tenure lasted barely nine months. She came under fire from several high-profile gymnasts, Biles included, for failing to offer a clear vision on the way forward and quit in September. Her resignation came shortly after the hiring, then quick removal, of Mary Lee Tracy as elite development coordinator; Tracy had been supportive of Nassar when the allegations first surfaced.

USA Gymnastics brought on former U.S. Representative Mary Bono to serve as interim president and CEO last month. Bono didn't even make it a week, stepping away after drawing widespread criticism for an Instagram post she made shortly before she was hired that showed her coloring over the Nike logo on her golf cleats in response to the company putting former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick at the forefront of a marketing campaign.
As the article has pointed out, killing USA Gymnastics is itself problematic because it is the only nationwide gymnastics organization in the US, and is vital not only to the national team but to supporting local clubs and organizations as well. Whatever new organization is created has to step into all those roles simultaneously and it's going to be hard work. It might be hard to find experienced consultants that aren't tainted or disqualified in some way by the scandal itself or prior association with USA Gymnastics' administration. But, what has to be done has to be done.

GOP Rep. Jason Lewis Filmed Himself Canvassing Voters ... Outside His District
An incumbent Republican congressman mocked his Democratic opponent as “manufactured” in a campaign video released Monday. But the video, which shows the congressman acting like he’s canvassing voters in a suburban Minnesota neighborhood, doesn’t appear to have been filmed in the congressman’s actual district.

Instead, Rep. Jason Lewis (R-MN) apparently filmed it in the suburb he calls home, one district north of the area he represents in Congress.

If you've seen or read about a viral video that's been making the rounds over the last few days of a bear cub persistently trying to climb up a steep snowy mountainside to get to its mother, you should know that whatever outlet you saw it on, probably left out the context that both the mother and cub were desperately trying to escape from the drone filming them and their panic at its approach caused many of the cub's slips and tumbles when it had almost gotten to the top several times during the incident.

A Texas juvenile court judge who lost re-election last night showed up for work as usual this morning but then proceeded to throw a quiet tantrum, releasing almost every defendant who appeared in his courtroom from custody regardless of charges, reportedly saying something about "that's what the voters want".

Indeed all three Harris County juvenile court justices, who were all Republicans, lost their seats to Democrats last night.

Two of those judges, including this one, have between them been personally responsible for a full fifth of all kids sentenced to state juvenile prisons across the entire state of Texas. This was apparently an angle of criticism used by his opponent during the campaign and it seems like that's what underpinned his attempt at "malicious compliance" with what he interpreted to be the voters' wishes.

ETA: to be clear, he did not dismiss all those cases - he just released them all from jail. He reset all of their cases to the day the newly-elected judge takes office.

About the bus driver who ejected passengers who would not allow a man in a wheelchair on the bus: I have to say that just being elderly and taking public transport in any large European city (London, Rome, Paris) is insane. Sunday I got off the train in Rome Italy and we were walking away from the platform. Some guy, probably in is 30's stepped on me and shoved me aside in order to pass and then literally knocked this [very frail] elderly gentleman in front of me with a cane onto the ground. My husband and I stopped and helped the guy with the cane up and all I could think was to shout after the guy "you nasty man"! I know people are in a hurry to catch connecting trains and all but really, is it worth hospitalizing an elderly or handicapped person?

I'm glad the bus driver did this. Sometimes I do wonder what makes people so damn callous.

Mexico moving to decriminalize marijuana

The party of Mexico’s president-elect has submitted legislation to legalize the possession, public use, growth and sale of marijuana in what would be a major change to the country’s narcotics strategy.

Senator Olga Sánchez Cordero – who has been picked as interior secretary by president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador – said prohibition has fed violence and poverty, criticizing a 12-year crackdown on drug gangs that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

“Today, the nation has taken the decision to change,” she told senators. “We don’t want more deaths. It will be a major contribution to bringing peace to our beloved country.”

If the bill passes, Mexico would join Canada, Uruguay and a number of US states that permit recreational use of the drug and allow its commercialization.

Federal judge halts Keystone XL pipeline construction

US District Judge Brian Morris found that the US government's use of a 2014 environmental review to justify issuing a presidential permit for construction of the cross-border pipeline violated the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act and the Administrative Procedure Act, according to the court order issued Thursday.

"The Court enjoins Federal Defendants and TransCanada from engaging in any activity in furtherance of the construction or operation of Keystone and associated facilities," the court document reads, "until the Department has completed a supplement to the 2014 SEIS (Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement) that complies with the requirements of NEPA and the APA."
