We have a food bank at the College. It was a hard sell. "But won't people who don't need it just come and take food?" Maybe, probably occasionally, but we have students who genuinely need it and more people coming through, even if just to grab a snack, lessens the perceived stigma. "But if they can afford to go to school they don't need it." Most, seriously, are utilizing financial aid that includes books and any other supplies they need such as welding rods, cosmetics kits, and uniforms. "But they have cell phones!" Yes we require them to have cell phones for MFA to clear their aid, check their email, submit forms to the school, communicate with advisors, and log into the LMS.

It went on and on, and still does to some degree, but most have witnessed the supporting effect in at least one student and "understand."

I get so fucking salty when someone says that. There was this piece on refugees on the TV in the break room once and it showed a bunch of shitty flip phones being charged from a shitty generator and this asshole starts complaining at the TV about it. I couldn't believe it.

This is the fucking future. You need a cellphone, even if you're homeless or a refugee let alone a student. Shit.

About 20% of college students experience food insecurity. The one time Mrs Quandry and I qualifed for food stamps was when I was a graduate student.

Thats what really gets me.

Its like people don't know you can get phones for less than $1000+.

I used a $20 Nokoa Windows Phone for years and it was pretty great, especially for the price.

Oh man, and those Lifeline phones were sadly terrible. Maybe it depended what particular company actually provided yours, and I'm sure the flip-style ones were probably fine, but for a while my mother had a Lifeline so-called smartphone from some company called Q Wireless I think. You could make calls on it okay, and the contacts list app worked, but it's good those were the only things she used it for because it was so slow and unresponsive that it was totally useless for ANYthing else, even the apps it came with, some of which couldn't even launch without freezing the phone or crashing. And on top of that it popped up ads like hourly as long as it was turned on, even if you weren't doing anything on it.

I really like the idea of the Lifeline program, but some of the companies providing the actual phones are so scummy, taking all the money but providing the cheapest most garbage products they could find.

Voting equipment company Dominion Voting Systems, a target of false conspiracy theories from President Donald Trump and his supporters since the 2020 election, has been bought by a firm run by a former Republican elections official, the new company announced Thursday.

The newly formed company, Liberty Vote, also vowed to follow the executive order Trump signed last spring seeking sweeping changes to election policies that multiple judges have put on hold for violating the Constitution.

KNOWiNK, a St. Louis-based provider of electronic poll books that allow election officials to confirm voter information, announced the deal and the name change. In a possible nod to a groundless conspiracy theory that linked Dominion to the late Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, the release highlighted that the company would become “100% American-owned.”

It seems they've bought their way to stealing the vote this time.

'We're not entirely sure what's going on': Jordan Peterson taken down by moldy room, daughter raises possibility of 'spiritual attack'

In a supreme victory for the forces of irony, Jordan Peterson has apparently been incapacitated by cleaning up a dirty room. The psychologist, author, and bottomless fountain of tears is currently hospitalized and suffering from pneumonia and sepsis, as well as a spate of neurological issues that have apparently left him unable to regulate his emotions.

His daughter, Mikhaila Peterson, took to X to give the world an update on her father’s health, describing his recovery as “slow and scary”, and admitting “we’re not entirely sure what’s going on”.

Hmm...

The stated cause of Peterson’s ongoing neurological and physical deterioration is SIRS (systemic inflammatory response syndrome) caused by mold exposure. This is apparently the result of decades of living with mold, though it was recently exacerbated by exposure to an especially moldy environment.

"Jordan Peterson taken down by mold" was not on my 2025 bingo card.

His daughter thinks demons are at fault for his illness. Mold demons?
