Interesting article. I agree with all their key points. One key thing to point out is that It seems to just be a minority of people who choose to stay informed. A good chunk of the American population has really no idea what's going on in Gaza for example and doesn't think they care. If you tell them they'll dismiss it as "exaggerated." The article is correct that Lenin didn't need much real information to motivate people in more effective ways.

Sadly, fear mongering is a much stronger motivator than sharing knowledge.

I think there's a big difference between wanting to stay informed and information as entertainment. I choose to stay informed by skimming a few reliable news sources (BBC/Reuters/Guardian/FT) and, if I'm interested, reading and (and sometimes reposting) anything I find particularly interesting. Ditto various substacks and magazines. But other than skimming the headlines, that's entertainment, in the sense it's something I do to pass the time, rather than reading a novel, watching a movie or doing stuff in SL.

The only alerts I have on my phone are for things I might actually need to know about urgently -- flood alerts, or bank and credit card transactions, for example.

Agreed. Tons of people who I'd consider to be totally uninformed are constantly consuming tons of "information" on the internet, but nothing related to news or current events. Real news sources aren't as entertaining as Warhammer 40k lore videos...

Though I find them considerably less tedious than continuous coverage of the latest non-developments in a news story, or (even worse) endless and meaningless "discussions" between talking heads, desperately trying to fill in the space between the next non-development.

Key Money quote:
How else can you look at the terabytes of genocide videos coming out of Gaza daily for nearly two years…just the most horrific things you can imagine posted by real people going through it live…things that only used to be witnessed by survivors of wars and then mostly suppressed and kept inside because of how traumatizing these experiences were to them…are now beamed into our feeds like they’re NFL highlights or something, interspersed with ads and selfies and Marvel movie trailers…with running commentary and outrage reaction clips on podcasts and newsletters and TikToks and quote tweets. All of it in the end gets ground down into spectacle — genocide as spectacle. Genocide drives engagement.

$85 million invested.

Imagine how much better the whole fertility and breeding rates these dumbasses are worried about would be if we spent that money actually fucking helping people as the world goes to shit.
Right. Wait, I'm still hung up back where they're entering their sperm in races - foot races?

Do what again?

This isn’t some below-the-belt insult. Sperm racing is an emerging “thing” among tech types now. A teenage entrepreneur called Eric Zhu came up with the idea, and went viral with his first sperm race in April. That initial race was rudimentary: college students gave sperm samples to be analysed and the results were turned into an animated race that visualised the fastest offerings.

The sequel will probably be better.

Yeah, that seems really...

Like, how does that even work? I feel like it can't be some weird... mixing test, like, how would you scan that? Do they all like, "go" at the same time?

I DONT UNDERSTAND.

I am not real sure I actually want to.

I dunno for sure about sperm "speed," but sperm motility is a thing they test to ascertain men's fertility. It's "how many of them little tadpoles are swimmin'?"

Sperm motility is tested through a semen analysis, which involves examining a semen sample under a microscope to determine the percentage of sperm actively swimming and moving forward. Normal sperm motility is considered 40% or higher, with a minimum of 32% showing progressive movement. Testing can be done at a laboratory by sending a collected sample or at home using a self-test kit.
There's nothing in there about the actual velocity of said tadpoles, though. I suppose you could measure a few through a microscope with a reticle and take an average or award top speed or something ... weird use of a microscope, though. You don't often see people sitting at microscopes with stopwatches in hand, but I suppose some tests would require that.

This is starting to sound like a Monty Python skit.

Introducing the Ocracoke Brogue, the only American dialect which doesn't sound like an American dialect. At all.
Sounds like a yank to me, listen to that rhotic "R". You hardly ever hear that outside North America any more.

These dudes also seem to think that sperm motility has anything to do genetoc desireability, which makes this all even more dumb.
