The only Apple product I own is the Apple ID I set up for work-related activity, and never figured out how to unsubscribe from.
Once upon a time I had an iPod Touch 4, then I had an iPod Touch 5, and then after a couple of years of app updates nothing would run well on it anymore so I stopped using it and haven't touched my Apple ID since.

Another checkmark in Project 2025's playbook.

Corporation for Public Broadcasting, funder of NPR and PBS, says it will end operations within months after federal budget cuts
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting said Friday it would begin winding down its operations after its funding was eliminated by the Trump administration and Congress.

The CPB is a private nonprofit founded in 1967 that serves as a steward of funding for public media. It provides funds to 1,500 local public radio and television stations as well as PBS and NPR. It employs about 100 people.
"Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations," said CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison in a statement. "CPB remains committed to fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and supporting our partners through this transition with transparency and care."

Finland's capital Helsinki managed to have no reported death by traffic over a full year. For reference: Helsinki has about 685.000 inhabitants.

The officials think that the speed limit of 30 km/h, smart design, better enforcement as well good public transportation and cyclicst infrastructure are main parts of that all-time record.

A speed limit of 30km/h would certainly be enough to make me not want to drive.

It is now almost five years since in San Francisco the Caution Against Racial and Exploitative Non-Emergencies Act or in short CAREN Act has passed.

The city officials had been fed up in 2020 with white people calling the police, because black people were selling water bottles, barbecuing or doing other legal activities.

This act enables the reported people to sue the caller for defamation.

I am unable to find any news or articles about successful use of this law. :(

The question, though, is what is the average speed of traffic where you live. Certainly in most London, it would be difficult to drive at anything like 30km/h for much of the day, and I understand the average speed of traffic in Manhattan is about 4.7mph, or roughly walking speed.

Hah! Yes there's a reason some people say no one drives in Manhattan though people do.

Manhattan is the extreme for not driving. Every residential little street in my town is 25 mph, about 80 miles from Manhattan.

New in South Carolina: radioactive polluted wasp nest.

A radioactive wasp nest with radiation levels ten times of what is allowed under regulations was found at a facility that once produced parts for US nuclear weapons, federal officials said.

"The wasp nest was sprayed to kill wasps, then bagged as radiological waste," says a US Department of Energy report released last week. No wasps were found at the site near Aiken in South Carolina.

Investigators say the contamination is not related to a nuclear waste leak, and that there was no impact to "the environment, or the public".
Environmental groups have criticised the government's handling of the situation.

The nest was discovered by workers who routinely inspect for nuclear radiation at the Savannah River Site (SRS) near Aiken, on 3 July.

It was found on a post nearby to where millions of gallons of liquid nuclear waste are stored, but there was no leak from the waste tanks, the report said.
Investigators attribute the dangerously-high levels found on the nest to what is called "onsite legacy radioactive contamination" - the residual radioactivity that remains from the time when the site was actively producing parts for nuclear bombs during the Cold War.

Okay that really bugs me.

I'm used to people, especially news agencies and government officials, treating bees, wasps, and hornets as all the same thing and treating the words as interchangeable, so I'd really want to see an actual picture of this nest, but obvs that's not going to happen.

If there's no leak then where did the radioactive material come from? The wasps had to be getting it from somewhere. You would think they might want to find out exactly where and not just shrug and blow it off like that.

Also, they probably killed the one that was going to mutate into The Wasp and save us all! :freakout:

(Another story indicated some engineers are more than a little peeved about the sloppy handling of this, too, because now there's no hope of figuring out how this happened.)

I'm lucky to not live in a congested big city. The average speed limit in town is 40mph (64km/h), which we have no problem achieving. On the freeway, it's 70mph (113km/h), and we're usually going faster than that.

I think the max speed posted anywhere in NJ is 65. Going down I 295 it is 65 then down to 55 a few miles from here. Not that anyone cares about the speed limit signs.

God it drives me nuts when topics of driving come up, mostly on Reddit, and people are like, "The speed limit doesn't matter if everyone else is speeding."

Like no. Its the limit. Its the top. Even if everyone is going 5mph more and passing you, while you are going the speed limit, you are still in the right and they are not. They are still breaking the law.
