In general, communion wine in quantity beyond that required to moisten the wafer only makes things depressing.

However ... if you happen to be in wine country, things may be better. Especially if the priest or a lot of the membership is from an order that runs a local winery or works there.

For an Englishman of my age, who once looked at America’s protections for liberty with envy, the sight of it turning into a sleazy, stupid, and corrupt dictatorship, or at the very least, a sleazy, stupid, and corrupt quasi-dictatorship is extraordinary and in its own way heartbreaking.

We once thought the US was a model to emulate.

To us, America was the land where journalists exposed the Watergate scandal and rugged individualists didn’t take any bullshit from corrupt politicians.

We used to argue that the hidebound UK needed to be inspired by its dynamic democracy and draw up a written constitution to protect our freedoms. Jonathan Freedland of the Guardian wrote a whole book saying pretty much that and the pressure group Charter 88 campaigned to Americanise the archaic British state.

I am in no position to criticise. I once wrote a book, which concluded that the world should emulate the protections of freedom of speech in the first amendment of the US constitution.

What a joke. No one today is inspired by the American republic. The protections for freedom of speech I once so admired now allow billionaires and corporations to corrupt democracy.
