This Reich, in its narcissistic folly, has wildly over-estimated our strength. There was a time when we were the vast bulk of China's export trade. The saying in China was, "When the US sneezes, China gets a cold." In other words, any US economic downturn had a huge impact in China.

Because they have a brain, China has worked diligently to diversify their markets. They don't screw around, either; for instance, they've invested billions in Africa to turn it into a market. We now account for just under 15% of China's total export trade. In some categories, we're in single digits. We're no longer the threat we used to be. Put another way, we no longer have the negotiating position we had twenty years ago.

I think the FU was more for Trump. In the unlikely event that he thought it through at all, he might have been counting on WM being able to, basically, negotiate away the pain for US consumers. Instead, count on 20% (!!) price hikes for a retailer who probably serves at least 90% of the MAGAts. They screamed bloody murder over 8% in 2022. Heck, they cried like it was the end of the world over 3% in 2023 and 2024. 20% means a lot of folks are going to be having cereal for dinner.

I have zero hope it will change any of them. Next election will roll around and the Trump Propo machine will be endlessly looping talking points about trans people pooping in school litter boxes while forcing white kids to sign apology notes to slave descendants and the idiot squad will lap it all up again.
