The only solution here is, Elon must remove readers context comments to keep people like Joey Mannarinskyy from looking like a fool.

EDIT: Sorry, this is from a year ago. I should have gone with my first instinct and posted it in the Political ZOMGWTF thread.

Crisis averted (temporarily, and yet again).

Congressional leaders announced an agreement Sunday on a short-term spending bill that will fund federal agencies for about three months, averting a possible partial government shutdown when the new budget year begins Oct. 1 and pushing final decisions until after the November election.

Thankfully, Trump's efforts to HULK SMASH failed spectacularly.
The stopgap move, set to fund the government through December 20, notably excludes The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE Act), which would require proof of citizenship in the voter registration process.

Last week, Trump publicly urged Republicans to allow a government shutdown if they are unable to include the SAVE Act in the government funding bill.

The state of California filed a first of its kind lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday alleging the company carried out a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling.

The complaint accuses the company of using slick marketing and misleading public statements for half a century to claim recycling was an effective way to deal with plastic pollution, according to a press release from Bonta’s office published Monday. It alleges the company continues to perpetuate the “myth” of recycling today.

The case, filed in the San Francisco County Superior Court, seeks to compel ExxonMobil “to end its deceptive practices that threaten the environment and the public,” the statement said.

Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California.

“Plastics are everywhere, from the deepest parts of our oceans, the highest peaks on earth, and even in our bodies, causing irreversible damage — in ways known and unknown— to our environment and potentially our health,” Bonta said.

“For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. ExxonMobil lied to further its record-breaking profits at the expense of our planet and possibly jeopardizing our health,” he said.

In response to the lawsuit, ExxonMobil pointed the finger back at California, which it said has an ineffective recycling system that officials have known about for decades: “They failed to act, and now they seek to blame others. Instead of suing us, they could have worked with us to fix the problem and keep plastic out of landfills.”

I start d using Tumblr quite a bit when Twitter died, and I hate that it has no dates.
On Tumblr go to the three dots in the upper right corner of the post and the first line is day/time or if old enough it will have the date and time.

Thanks.

And for other comments and why, I mostly only care because I kind of want to know if a person is at all active before I follow them.

I feel like I follow some interesting people, but then never see them, only to realize it's because they were last active like 5 years ago.

GOP congressman gave jobs to his lover and to his fiancée’s daughter, New York Times says
New York Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, one of the GOP’s most endangered House incumbents, reportedly gave both his lover and his fiancée’s daughter part-time jobs in his district office on Long Island, a potential violation of House ethics rules.

D’Esposito hired the pair shortly after taking office in 2023, according to The New York Times, together paying them nearly $30,000 in taxpayer funds, records of which are publicly available. The House of Representatives’ code of conduct forbids members from employing close family members.

The report could be a significant blow to his already tenuous path to reelection. D’Esposito is locked in a tight rematch with Democrat Laura Gillen, whom he defeated by fewer than 10,000 votes two years ago. His victory then flipped the South Shore district now considered by both parties to be a critical battleground in the fight for control of the House.

Ooh, this looks linteresting.

The leader of the nonprofit Haitian Bridge Alliance filed charges against former president Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, for the chaos that ensued from their uncorroborated statements about immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, eating pets, according to the Cleveland law firm representing the agency.
The following charges were filed:
  • Disrupting public service — by causing widespread bomb and other threats that resulted in massive disruptions to the public services in Springfield, Ohio;
  • Making false alarms — by knowingly causing alarm in the Springfield community by continuing to repeat lies that state and local officials have said were false;
  • Committing telecommunications harassment — by spreading claims they know to be false during the presidential debate, campaign rallies, nationally televised interviews, and social media;
  • Committing aggravated menacing in violation — by knowingly making intimidating statements with the intent to abuse, threaten, or harass the recipients, including Trump’s threat to deport immigrants who are here legally to Venezuela, a land they have never known;
  • Committing aggravated menacing — by knowingly causing others to falsely believe that members of Springfield's Haitian community would cause serious physical harm to the person or property of others in Springfield; and
  • Violating the prohibition against complicity — by conspiring with one another and spreading vicious lies that caused innocent parties to be parties to their various crimes.

My browser says the website isn't available in my region, so I haven't actually read the article itself.

But since it's Florida news, I'll just simply assume that it says Republicans are making life worse for everyone.

You can usually get around news sites blocking methods by stopping the page load at a certain point, or using a text to speech plugin to access the document which is still held in the browser object (but not normally available), but the Sentinel has upped their game. Here's a summary another site put out citing both Orlando papers as sources:

State’s sex ed guidance: Florida school districts should stress abstinence and not teach students about contraception, show them photos of the human reproductive systems or discuss topics such as sexual consent or domestic violence, state officials have reportedly advised in phone calls to districts that had waited for a year for guidance on their proposed sexual education teaching materials. After the calls, both the Orange and Broward school districts announced they would abandon their own plans and adopt the state guidance to “emphasize abstinence.” Elissa Barr, a professor of public health at the University of North Florida, said about a dozen other school districts have received the same advice. “We in Florida, we’re moving in the wrong direction,” she said. “We should be making data driven decisions, and we’re just not.” Orlando Sentinel and Sun Sentinel.
