Okay all you lovable commie freaks, I really need you all to explain something to me because I can't figure it out on my own. I'm like...pretty liberal, I mean I don't know if I'd survive Apocalypse-mode purity testing or anything like that, but I think I'm pretty left leaning right? And I know what a lot of conservative criticism is based on - like, when conservatives are making fun of some made-up or highly exaggerated "thing that liberals say/do", I can usually identify the real-life thing they're intending to mock or exaggerate. Or if it's completely made up I usually can identify the source, and like, maybe some deep lore behind where it came from or why they came up with it. Conspiracy theories, satanic panic, the whole thing.

But...what is it with the eating bugs? Conservatives are obsessed with this idea that liberals want to eat bugs, orrrr are encouraging people to eat bugs, or want to replace all food with bugs or...something. Like harp on it a lot, and it's far too specific to just be a complete out-of-nowhere exaggeration of veganism or something (vegans definitely do not want anyone to eat bugs). So where does it come from? In my whole life I've never heard anyone suggest eating bugs. I don't see people doing it or saying it on the news. When I was a kid I heard of chocolate-covered grasshoppers as some other-culture thing, but that's it. So do any of you know what the deal is with this? The mystery is killing me.

It was just some scientists talking about ways of increasing the amount of protein available to humans without increasing oil dependence and other environmental ills associated with things like increasing cattle farming. The nerd press picked up the papers/discussions of the scientist....and then the mainstream press picked up on it leading to articles like the Guardians.

You have to remember, these right wing nutcases consider soy/veggie burgers to be an assault on their way of life. "them there commie liberals want to take away my meat and make me eat sissy Boca burgers and drive Prius."

The cancellation comes hours after authorities announced a 19-year-old Austrian citizen was arrested Wednesday morning and a second suspect was arrested in the afternoon.

The suspects allegedly radicalized themselves online, Franz Ruf, director-general for public safety in the Ministry of the Interior, said at a press conference. The 19-year-old suspect allegedly pledged allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State at the beginning of July, Ruf said.
