This exact same kind of thing happened a few years ago at White Sands too; they had only gotten about two miles from the parking lot before collapsing. People seriously underestimate the danger of heat, especially when you're just not used to it. And ffs don't take a baby and your dog.Desert:
Gallon of water (4L - ish) per person per day.
Stay in the shade, don't go wandering around in the sun.
And even then, once it's a certain temperature, you can sweat faster than you can drink.
It sounds counter-intuitive, but cover up in loose, lightweight clothing.
Less sun exposure and it vaguely slows down dehydration via sweat.
