UK couple who named baby after Hitler jailed for terror group membership

This received some publicity (and may well have been discussed here) at the time of the trial, but here's the follow-up. The sentences were quite significant -- 6 years and 6 months for him, and five years for her.

The sentences were, it should be emphasised, not for saddling the poor child with "Adolf" as a name (though some might think that merits a significant sentence in itself) or for "hate speech" but for membership of a proscribed terrorist organisation -- the same legislation that's used to prosecute members of jihadist or Irish paramilitary groups.

I'm flabbergasted to learn that owning nunchucks is a constitutional right. More so than a baby was named after Hitler.

Authorities say at least 43 have been killed and nearly 600 more injured in Indonesia today by a localized tsunami after an eruption of the Krakatau volcano. The tsunami was likely generated by an undersea landslide triggered by the eruption.

Krakatau most infamously killed 30,000 people in 1883, also mostly via a tsunami, during a colossal eruption that ended with nearly the entire island collapsing into the magma chamber below it; and the event caused atmospheric and climactic effects worldwide. The currently-active volcano has grown up from the center of the caldera in the century since.

The casualties from the Krakatau tsunami have grown to at least 222 killed, more than 840 injured. Objectively the tsunami was not as bad as the one that hit a few months ago (the one Ellie mentions); however, this tsunami struck at 9:30pm local time - at night - and there was no associated earthquake to serve as a warning.

Some nightmare fuel for you: video of the tsunami suddenly striking out of nowhere in the middle of a concert at a beach resort:

There were several casualties from that venue alone. In an Instagram post, the singer of the band that was performing on stage explains that the rest of the band at the time of the post was either dead or missing, and his wife was missing as well. Since that post it has sadly been confirmed he is the only surviving band member.

Here is a video of Krakatau erupting earlier in the evening, before the tsunami:

Krakatau has been very active lately, and is often observed closely by visiting tourists and scientists, although I'm not currently aware of any 24/7 scientific watch like you'd find at Hawaii or around certain Japanese volcanoes for instance. YouTube is full of videos of Krakatau eruptions taken as recently as this fall:

The second video of the night eruptions is mesmerizing. As beautiful as these things are, it's easy to forget how deadly they can be.

Epstein Allegedly Directed Second Woman to Have Sex with Harvard Prof. Dershowitz, Court Documents State | News | The Harvard Crimson

Court documents filed in a recently settled lawsuit against billionaire, Harvard donor, and convicted sex offender Jeffrey E. Epstein allege Epstein directed a second woman to have sex with Harvard Law Professor Emeritus Alan M. Dershowitz.
Epstein — who holds strong ties to the University through multi-million dollar donations and close relationships with high-profile affiliates — was first charged with operating a sex ring of underage girls out of his Palm Beach, Fla. home in 2005. At the time, Dershowitz served on the seven-person legal team that struck a plea deal with prosecutors on Epstein’s behalf, the Herald reported in a three-part feature last month.

It's hard to tell, but something a little more complex than a simple undersea landslide may have occurred at Krakatau. Some early satellite imagery suggests that a significant portion of the volcano may have collapsed to generate the tsunami. It's hard to tell right now because to direct observation today, Krakatau looked like this, cloaked completely in billowing steam:

So it's hard to get a look at what the actual volcano surface looks like. But those dark black spiky-looking explosions you see in that video, seem to be phreatomagmatic explosions - they're caused by seawater directly interacting with magma. Given that two days ago the vent was at the top of respectably tall cone and far away from the ocean, needless to say some pretty substantial changes must have happened in order for such interaction to be possible - something like a Mount St. Helens type flank slide, although on a much smaller scale (still large enough, unfortunately, to have deadly results), but that opened up the side of the volcano all the way down past sea level, allowing the ocean water to rush in over the conduit perhaps. Although it is always possible of course that a brand new vent opened right at the water's edge too. But that tsunami had to come from somewhere and a sector collapse certainly would've produced one.

Trivia: the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption caused a tsunami too.

Here's a video clip with a better angle on the volcano, and it reveals a lot more. It certainly appears here that half the Anak Krakatau cone is gone - neatly cut through, as if by a cookie-cutter:

Essentially half the volcano separated and slid into the water. This is an interesting but potentially misleading coincidence given the aftermath of the 1883 eruption. But it's easily explainable; Anak Krakatau is a cinder cone really...it's made up mostly of rock debris and ash that have been ejected onto the sides of the cone, building up over time - the same way you see happening in that night-time video I posted earlier. The material is molten so it kinda fuses together a bit as it cools and hardens - but ultimately, the mountain has only a little more structural integrity than the gigantic pile of coal that sits outside your local electric plant. If a cone like this stops spattering and starts erupting actual, flowing lava - which is what appeared to be happening the day before the tsunami - that lava is very heavy stuff, and if a high enough volume of it streams out - or if enough of it builds up over time - the weight of that lava can trigger the cinder matrix beneath it to suddenly come loose and start a chain-reaction slide. Odds are that's what happened in this instance.

The casualty toll for the tsunami has risen to at least 373 dead, 1,400 injured. :(
