On a morning in November 2023 Eamon Keenan received a worrying phone call. “People in homeless accommodation and hospitals are collapsing,” Dr Keenan, a psychiatrist who runs the addiction services at Ireland’s state-funded health-care provider, recalls being told. It was the start of a bleak few weeks. In Dublin and Cork, the country’s biggest cities, 77 people would end up overdosing. The initial suspect was dodgy heroin but laboratory analysis revealed a dangerous new class of drugs—nitazenes. In the months since, these have been detected everywhere from Freetown in Sierra Leone to Sydney in Australia.

Nitazenes are opioids, a family of chemicals that include morphine and heroin as well as fentanyl, a drug that causes tens of thousands of deaths in America every year. Although measures of their potency vary, scientists estimate nitazenes can be hundreds of times stronger than heroin, with some thought to be dozens of times stronger than fentanyl. But whereas heroin and fentanyl have long histories as medical analgesics and thus have been extensively studied, hardly any research exists on nitazenes. With nitazene use rising around the world, and in particular in Australia and Europe, scientists are scrambling to gather crucial data on how dangerous these new drugs are and who is at risk. The emerging picture is grim.

Scientists in Australia conducted the study, a phase I trial of a tropical cream developed by the company Syntara. People applying the cream experienced no major side effects, they found, and the drug appeared to trigger changes in the skin within older, or mature, scars. Though these results are still early, they may point to a potential treatment for otherwise permanent scars, the researchers say.

I'm assuming the changes in scarred skin is not converting it to marble or something.

I agree with the sentiment of "unpligging", but also it feels like maybe its being pushed a bit with the idea of "Please ignore all the heinous bull shit we are inflicting on the world, we really didn't expect so much push back, just unplug and let us more easily strip away your everything."

Scientists Achieve ‘Striking Reversal of Alzheimer’s’ in Mice

Scientists have achieved a “striking” reversal of Alzheimer’s disease in mice by restoring the normal function of the brain's vasculature—the network of blood vessels that supplies it with oxygen and nutrients.

Researchers at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and West China Hospital of Sichuan University (WCHSU), working with partners in the UK, showed this was possible using nanotechnology.

“Our study demonstrated remarkable efficacy in achieving rapid Aβ clearance [in Alzheimer’s the main ‘waste’ protein is amyloid-β], restoring healthy function in the blood–brain barrier [known as the BBB] and leading to a striking reversal of Alzheimer’s pathology,” said study author Lorena Ruiz Perez, researcher at the Molecular Bionics group from the IBEC, in a statement.
