As most of you are probably aware, Stephen Colbert's late show on CBS has been cancelled. Many speculate this is because CBS wants to merge with Paramount in a multi billion dollar deal. He continues to give hard hitting commentary. He has been given 10 months(when his contract expires?) which is quite a while. We shall see if he is allowed to continue.
Ah yes, hard hitting commentary of making pee jokes. He's damn lucky to be given 10 months notice of losing his job after ten years. While it is sad to see a voice let go, his audience has been shrinking over the years and he was just a left leaning version Limbaugh. Since 2022, Colbert has hosted 176 left-leaning guests and only one Republican and the first six months of this year, the show booked 43 left-leaning political guests — and zero conservatives — leading all late-night programs in partisan tilt.
Colbert’s left-wing ‘Late Show’ became ‘therapy’ session for liberals: study

Many have questioned the decision, suggesting that it was done to appease Trump and the FCC, but everyone involved has pointed directly to the show’s bottom line from the start.

"It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount," the network said when first announcing the "Late Show" would be canceled.

Puck News' Matt Belloni reported that the late-night show "has been losing more than $40 million a year" for CBS and that it had a budget of "more than $100 million per season."

When breaking his public silence, Cheeks did not confirm the exact amount but acknowledged the "Late Show" was losing significant cash.

"At the end of the day, it just wasn’t sustainable to continue," he said.
If this is true, and based on a lot of info it does seem so, I'm surprised he lasted this long. I fear Colbert is just not that popular as he thinks he is. Proof of this was the We're With Colbert protest that was supposed to be part of a nationwide call for “integrity.” Yet only 20 people showed up outside CBS and left after a short while. That's some hardcore support!
NYC’s ‘We’re With Colbert’ rally for late-night host is a bust with just 20 protesters

I'm more upset that Colbert had 200 employees and that they are going to be out of a job than omg what is Colbert going to do?

But yes, the timing of events is suspicious.

I must have terrible taste in movies ‘cause I just watched The Last Witch Hunter (18% on RT) and really liked it. It was fun, and wish there was a 2nd, or even a series.

Totally unrelated and nobody cares.

I am not like, a huge Gal Gadot fan, but I really dislike the recent meme of her being a terrible actress, because it feels like its only a thing due to her being Israeli. Like, nobody cared she was a shitty actress until the war, now its a dumb meme.

It just feels tacky.

But wasn't she a shitty actress before the war?

("Shitty" might be overdoing it.)

Yeah, thats kind of my point, no one mentioned it before.

And shitty is overdoing it. She has a heavy accent that makes some delivery seem "weird" mostly.

Ahem.

Aheeeeem.

A lot of reviewers loved her in the first Wonder Woman. I didn't hate her in that one, either. So again, maybe "shitty" is an overstatement.

Are some people now swayed to dislike her work because of her politics? Most likely. But that's hardly a new thing with criticism.

I enjoyed it, though I had to take up a large shovel and pound my head with it several times to help my suspension of disbelief regarding the length of time in connection to their cold case (Chloe Pirrie's work as Lingard helped a lot with that).

Yeah, the story itself was a little far fetched, and Matthew Goode’s character got on my nerves at times, but l loved Akram and Rose. I could watch a crime series with just those two.

Been watching Mobland and enjoying it. Helen Mirren is in it so I looked her up to see what else she’s been doing and came across this little gem. I also find it ridiculous when people say things like, Oh, how cute! when they see an older person doing something normal (that they deem reserved for the young?)

Anyway, she’ll be in the movie The Thursday Murder Club is out on Netflix on the 28th

Helen Mirren decries condescending attitudes towards couples in their 80s

It’s a sight that makes even the most hard-hearted millennial coo: an octogenarian couple expressing their affection towards one another.
But Helen Mirren has railed against being so “insulting”, saying such condescension makes her want to tell people to “fuck off”.

I watched The Thursday Murder Club last night and loved it. Just a simple murder mystery, with good guys and bad guys, which you know will end well. It isn’t great cinema, just a fun and easy watch on a Thursday night. I think they just called all the British stars of a certain generation and asked if they wanted to join the cast and they all said, Yeah!

Ben Kingsley, Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, etc. There’s even David Tennant and Lucifer (Tom Ellis).

Apparently, it isn’t a good adaptation of the book according to those who’ve read the series by Richard Osman, but I’ve never read them. Anyway, ’twas fun and I laughed.

Yep, we watched The Thursday Murder Club last night as well! We've read the original book, and yes, they did a hatchet job on it. However, it's still a really enjoyable movie in its own right, just don't expect it to follow the same plot as the book.

I read the first book a few years ago, but never bought any more in the series, so apparently I wasn't all that impressed with it (my memories of it are vague). I'm not invested in how closely they follow the plot: I'm there for the cast.

So the Netflix series is on my watch list for evenings with Mrs. Beebo, but not until we finish The Marlow Murders on PBS.

I feel like murder mystery adaptations are one area that could almost benefit from a bit of changing. If only so book readers are not necesarily like "Oh Oh, thats the killer!" right off.

Also, I feel like if its one that is done well where they actuallynhave clues, visual clues and prose clues may not work as well in a 1:1 setting.

Its always weird and amusing how political based TV shows often try to not play into party stereotypes so you end up with characters who are these weird amalgomations of political views that don't make any sense.
