I'm starting to get really weird with my instant ramen.

I still buy the cheap stuff, the Maruchan packets that are two for a dollar. I have particular flavors that I like, but it's still the cheap stuff.

So normally you boil up some water, put in the noodles for 3 minutes, then cut the heat and stir in the flavor packet, give it about a minute, and plate. Or, well, bowl. And that's it. Including waiting for the water to boil total time is like what, 6 or 7 minutes? That's why they call it "instant".

Then one day I started putting like half a handful of frozen veggies in it. I put them in when I add the noodles, and it cools the water a bit, so it has to come back to a boil. I'll say this adds maybe 1 minute to the time. 7 minutes.

Then I started soft-boiling an egg for it. The water for the egg takes 3 minutes to get boiling and then 7 minutes to soft-boil the egg, for a total of 10 minutes. The egg can sit in the cold bath while the noodles are cooking, so that's no extra time. And I can shell the egg during the minute of cool-down after I add the flavor packet to the noodles, so that's no extra time either. But now the total time is 14 minutes.

But of course it's not just 14 minutes because I have to put water in a container and chill it in the freezer for 30 minutes before I start making the egg so it's nice and super cold by the time the egg is done. Yeah, doing that only takes a minute and I can go off and do whatever between then and when I start the water for the egg, so it's not all prep time, but still, it's something I have to do as part of the process, so now we're up to 44 minutes.

44 minutes to make one (1) bowl of instant ramen. The cheap stuff.

It makes it taste so goooood though, and now I'm still thinking of adding other stuff, although it wouldn't take any extra time because I can chop some scallions while the egg is boiling for instance.

Why am I doing this? It's supposed to be junk food for when you're feeling too lazy to make real food!

Boil a dozen eggs and refrigerate them. It takes the same amount of time as doing one.

How long does a soft-boiled egg keep in the fridge, though?

You don't add homemade Chinese bbq pork? Not with this stuff:

That's for cheaters. (Me, for instance.) The real stuff is marinated in soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, and spices, then slow-cooked over an open flame.

Along about then you might cross over into "weird about your ramen."

Fun Fact: Char Siu means "cooked on a fork."

I usually add the frozen vegetables or fresh sprouts if I have them, sometimes some chopped ham or pork if I have it and often poach an egg to put on top and then put scallions on top of that. I also add a 1/2 tsp of toasted sesame oil and a healthy squirt of Sriracha to the water that I put the flavor packets in. It may take a little longer but it's still faster than running down to any of the local fast food joints around here and way better tasting.

Well you've improved it. Generally there's nothing wrong with instant ramen, it's a time saver. I once saw a documentation about how real ramen is being made, that will keep you cooking for several hours.

It was actually this documentation about a one person Ramen venture. He starts working at 2 am, and his freshly made Ramen then is ready around 6:30 am.

Anyway, this was dinner yesterday: home made tarte flambee. A very quick and easy recipe, also very tasty.
