I really thought is was more known. Didn’t think it was specific to here.
I recall learning about how bread & butter pickles were originally from the New England area, or at least, that’s where the name came from. It’s early and I don’t feel like going down the pickle rabbit hole, but I would guess that early settlers from Europe in Nouvelle France/New England probably had to deal with harsh winters and pickled everything they could to get through months of no crops.
Anyhow, pears, apples, celery, rhubarb, and spices… people have their own versions. I think you have fruit trees, don’t you Rose?
I don’t want to put anyone off, It does taste good, not just with tourtière, but pork, poultry. Just remember to not include cores….Someone usually makes some during the holidays to give as gifts for the host, or add to potluck type big family gatherings.
